hello all of you,got the most annoying problem ever.everything i burn to dvd starts skipping toward the end.i had an avi file which i used nero to burn to dvd.just over 3gig in size and about an hour and 20 mins long.used burn speed of 1x.just watched the film and after about an hour it starts to skip and gets worse and worse till its virtually frozen.does it with everything i do.any ideas why,its costing me a fortune in wasted disks.....

You are probably burning too close to the edge of the disc where media coverage can be spotty or missing in some brands of media. It could also be the media you are using. Try using Verbatims, Sony, Maxell, Fuji, those last 3 should be made in japan. You shouldn't have to burn at 1x, 4x should be fine if your system can do it. Its probably the media you are using, but you could post a Nero burn log, and we could see if there is something else going on. Also, you might need to de-frag your HD as a badly fragged HD can induce skipping in to a copied DVD. Post the log, but edit out your serial number. If using Nero 6 it is in program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.txt

hi,thanks for replying.i think this is what you are looking for.hard drive does need a defrag so i'll try that.using hyundai dvd's,they were pretty cheap!!!

Thanks for getting the log. I got taken out of the picture by the need for sleep. Sometimes i have to sleep, but not for very long.

And to add to what creaky said, change the media. Cheap media usually means crappy media. You can get the good stuff for .30 to .40 per disc US, when it is on sale. If your from the UK, creaky knows of a good online spot. http://www.supermedia.com is also a good place to find genuine Taiyo Yudens (my favorite media) Using good media can make all the difference in the world, as to if you have a successfull burn or not.

ok,followed your advice,tne biggest problem i have is with memory.according to task manager i've got about 48 running processes when the computer has started up(which takes ages).how do i know which of these processes i can stop to free up memory.thanks...

I am afraid even the best closing down of programs will still leave you short on memory. Windows gobbles up memory, and many apps will load some TSRs (terminate stay resident) taking up memory, but not running. You can do a ctrl+alt+del and go to the processes tab. Highlite process you want to kill, then hit end process tab. Windows hates when you kill off a program this way. Don't kill off any that says user name: SYSTEM, or Network service/local service. Even doing that, you are probably going to have problems until you get more physical memory. 512MB as a mimimum should be OK if you keep other processes closed. There are supposed to be some programs out there that kill off un-needed apps, but i don't remember the exact name. I was looking a download.com for a free program, and i found this one with a free trial:

and you can go thru this list, and find a start up program manager that fits your needs:

Look for something free and simple that lets you kill off starting apps.
