The USB dongle you have sounds like it is a protection device which you need to run the software associated with it. That's why it costs so much to replace.

If it is a genuine dongle and the software is registered to you, the software company should replace it for you if it has gone wrong. But you will have to send it back to them and wait for the replacement, so you will be unable to run the software for a while.

BTW, what is the software you are using ?

Presumably you are using a piece of software that is supplied with a USB dongle as a security method.
These are supplied with special codes on that can not be copied from one drive to another and the software will not function without the dongle being in place first.
These are norammly supplied on very expensive software, a freind of mine is a kitchen fitter and uses Articad, his dongle was stolen with his laptop and the replacement dongle for that was over £1200
Are you using the dongle on a laptop and getting it digging into you as you sit with it on your lap? or is it damaged in some way? you have not been very clear so not sure why you would need a new one.
What software are you using?
Many programs get cracked and a dongle crack can be found on the torrent sites, these bypass the USB device security.
Presumably you have a legal paid for copy, as you already have a dongle, so if a crack can be located then just use that.

wow thanks for all the timely replies. Yes it is a security device used to run my software "The Pulse" (used for digitizing artwork before running through an embriodery machine). The software is loaded on the desktop at the shop and on one at home. I take the dongle back and forth so I can work at home on the weekends. The journeys haven't been that kind to the dongle. sometimes I have to really wiggle it to make it work. and something's rattling around in the encasment. When I called, I was told for an outrageous fee and the old dongle, they would send me a new one and a # to call so I could program the new dongle. So, I just thought I might be able to download some programs and make a new one myself.

Thankyou all
