Hey ozzy214 :)
That is OK for testing purposes but I wouldn't use it as a replacement for a case. You can pick up a great case for as little as $30 at newegg.com. I have the setup in your post and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Not something I would want to depend on.

Okay thanks scuba. Guess I wasted 5 dollars then. Oh well.
I just mostly wanted a way to temporaly to hook up a hard drive up for back up. But since you say this unreliable then the case its gotta be. Thanks to all who responded!:>

Excellent point ddp about being carefull when you position the drive while connected! Things that we take for granted, others might not. Good to see you also have a wood bench ozzy, me too! :)

So what does this do? Temporarily give you the ability to hook a hard drive up outside your PC and transfer files back and forth through USB?

The same as an external HDD would do through a USB for the most part, but without the case.

Well I just got it through the priority usps mail today. And I must say excellent product. It came nicely packaged. It cam with the power supply, cable , and also a adapter so you could hook any laptop drives to the usb-ide cable. It works beautifuly with usb 1.0 & 2.0. Plus it came with a drivers disc for 98, but drivers not needed for xp. I must say this was the cheapest alternative to buying a case. And in a way better. Because of the fact a lot of external cases dont have fans, but with the drive exposed it wont overheat. I currently tested it up to a 80 gig drive and it showed all the gigs. The only thing that threw me for a sec was it came up under my computer as a hard drive not removable storage like I thought it would.
So to end it all and my short review go for it. Ceaper than a case...just make sure you dont touch the drive control board to anything metal or you will fry the drive. Lay it on wood or cardboard. Or even upside down so the board is up in the air. Unless ya the lucky ones with a seagate. A lot of the seagate's have a shield to protect the board.
I paid 15.15 including shipping through ebay at auction. The person whom sell this is here...happy bidding! AND NO!! This is not a commercial or a product Im selling. I asked what everyone thought how it was and now I reviewed to pass the word as a alternative to a case.
http://stores.ebay.com/Superdeal-01 is the seller's store on ebay and the exact name of the product was usb 2.0 ide adapter.
P.s. The adapter that was included to convert a lap top drive into a standard ide connector will also work inside the comp if you want to hook up a lap top drive permanetly to your desktop!

No I havnt benchmarked it yet. But transfer with hard drives is fine it seems. But when I had it hooked to a dvd burner I ended up having two coasters. So I just hooked the burner to the ide cable. Butother than that it seems alright. I will benchmark transfer speed and let ya know. Possibly my burner doesnt like the chipset used to make the cable.
