Hello all, I'm sure I've seen a simular thread here before. did the research & can't find the thread. Here is my problem. I recently upgraded from a Sony DRU 510A 4x burner to a Lite On sohw 1693S 16x Burner. I'm Useing the same -R 8X blank media. I'm getting a successful backup, but My stand alone won't read the disk all of a sudden since the upgrade. Does this have anything to do with the write speed or is there something else that needs to be done. Plz help. Thanx

Oddly enough iv had this problem with a lite-on I have.
If I burn at 8X it wont play on my standalone. But if I slow it down to 4x it will play.
I used to use IMGtool to burn which I had to always change the speed to 4x but somtimes id forget and make a burn at 8x always pissed me off cause it wouldnt read when I did that. The disc where 8x speed but of course wasnt the greatest disc so maybe that was the reason as well. So either slow the burn to 4x and see if it works or get better media.

Try using Taiyo Yuden 4X +R disks, set the book type to DVD-ROM and you'll be fine, I have the Sony DRU-800A which I think is the same as your Lite-On burner and this procedure works just fine. Or, go to www.supermediastore.com and look up the Taiyo Yuden 4X -R DVD's, they are inexpensive and work very well.

lil 1,
You're lucky if you've had good results with phillips media in the past as most of it is made by sh*ty manufactures. Here are some media codes.
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01) = garbage
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPN R00) = usually not bad
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RITEK R01) = so so
Philips DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG F01) = garbage
Philips DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPN R01) =usually not bad
Philips DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG E01) = garbage
Philips DVD+R 8x (Philips 081) = genuine phillips, good
Philips DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02) = usually not bad
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01) = garbage
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01) = garbage
Philips DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS 041) = good
Philips DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11) = good
Philips DVD-R 8x (CMC MAG AE1) = total garbage
I agree with blivetNC that you should use better media like verbatim (which I prefer), taiyo yuden, maxell, sony, or fuji's that are made in japan. I also recommend using DVD+R media since you can booktype them to dvd-rom with your litey. Here is a link to the lite-on booktype utility and there is also a link to a usage guide on that page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441
Make sure your firmware is current and as a rule of thumb burn your media at 1/2 it's rated speed (burn 8x dvd's at 4x etc). Good luck.

Thankx all, I take the suggestions & change my media. Could this be why Nero 7 says there is no common burn speed?

Definetly get some quality plus format and booktype those babies. That should take care of that no disc error.
I've encountered that many times, and the booktyped backups do have a heck of a lot higher percentage for stand alone players to recognize them. That's why I stay away from the dash format.
Listen to Mort81,he knows his lite-on booktyping!

When I burn Fuji MIJ DVD+R 8X (Taiyo Yuden-YUDEN000T02) in Nero 7.0 they will burn at 6X and 8X, using the CD-DVD speed disk quality test I constantly get 95-98% scores so burning at 6X shouldn't be a problem provided you have enough memory and/or aren't multitasking. Ritek G-05 (Office Max DVD-R 8X) burn well at either 4,6, or 8X. Verbatim 16X DVD-R burn great at 4,8, and 16X. All three of these play on every standalone player I have encountered. Personally I recommend the Taiyo Yuden 4X's I mentioned earlier if you are looking for 4X media which will work with the 510A and the 1693S, for 8X I recommend the Taiyo Yuden YUDEN000T02 +R booktyped to DVD-ROM which are my favorite. (Fuji MIJ and Sony MIJ) MIJ=Made In Japan
FYI, the standalones I have tried are Sony, Philips, GE, Apex, Magnavox, Samsung, and an unknown Chrysler Mini van onboard unit. I hope this helps.
