I received an external firewire Sony DVD Burner (DRX-800UL) for my laptop for christmas. It came with Nero SE 6.
The first 6 DVDs I burned were all data DVDs, everything burned no problem. Then the next 5 kept locking up on me. I upgraded the firmware on the DVD player, still locked up. I upgraded nero to the newest version, it still locks up.
I now have 10 new coasters due to Nero just stopping burning at different percentages. I've tried burning at different speeds and it just stops at different times. The timer keeps counting up, the DVD player is making noise, but it never finishes....the percentage complete just freezes on the screen.
Any ideas on what else I could try to get this working again? I don't understand why it would work fine and then for no reason stop working. I haven't installed anything new on the computer since this.
Thanks for your help.

Could be a number of things such as DMA settings or bad media. Post a log and we'll take a look at it.

Sorry, I found the most recent log....it was in the Nero folder, not in "My Documents" where the other one was found.

This part has me wondering:
Quote: Adapter driver: <> HA 2
I think there is supposed to be a driver there. Check your system ASPI with nero info tool. It should come back with something like this:
All green. If you get system ASPI corrupted or not installed,
here is what AD says about ASPI layers and how to install them:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm
Just give it a check, grasping at straws, but worth checking.

Ohh, i see now, this is probably your main problem:
Quote: Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AM3
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
you got stuck with some of the worst media out there. Try some Verbatim, or sony, maxell, fuji last 3 made in japan. CMC could be your main/only problem here.

I checked for APSI and it said that I didn't have any system APSI installed. I followed your links and got that installed and running (Nero InfoTool says APSI is installed and working correctly).
I went to burn another DVD and it worked!!! :)
Then I went to burn a 2nd one and it froze up again :(
I guess my next step is to try some new media....which kind of sucks because I received a Memorex DVD-R 100-DVD spindle with my DVD burner. :(

I thought there might be something wrong with the ASPI. Glad you got it fixed. Now all you need to do is get some better media, and i think you will be a happy camper. Even FREE Memosux is not good enough for me. It causes too many problems. Stick with the GOOD media, and your burning problems will be few and far between.
You may be able to trade those Memosux to one of your friends (one you don't like a lot) Good Luck :)

Well I went out and purchased some SONY DVD-R 's to see if that would fix the problem I have been having.
It still locked up, even with the SONY DVD-R :(

Meaty84,
Sorry, I really thought changing media would get you burning again. That Sony media is good stuff. You may still be having problems with ASPI. Try this program to check your ASPI.
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?sess=no... and you can use this to force aspi if it is not taking. Looks like some of the drivers are there though.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm I will look thru the last log some more..
This is strange:
Quote: 2:47:28 PM #32 CDR -600 File WriterStatus.cpp, Line 172
Device not available
SONY DVD RW DRU-800A\H2 T0
Maybe you are having a problem with the firewire connection? It is faster than USB, but if it lets you use either cable, try the USB connection. It is really starting to look like the drive may be bad. Is the other drive in your system able to burn DVDs, or is that a CD burner only? I am running out of ideas here.

Don't be sorry at all, I appreciate all the help I can get on this issue, this forum has helped me from throwing this burner out my window :)

As long as ASPI is installed and not corrupted, it should be ok. Let me link you to adaptecs latest aspi:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppdetail.jsp?sess=no&p... That should put the latest version on your system. The drive may have died after those first 6 DVDs. Sometimes you get a defective one. You could try to exchange it, if that option is available to you.
Quote: Adapter driver: <> HA 2
there still isn't a driver listed there in between those brackets which leads me to believe Nero doesn't see a controller for the device.

I installed the newest version of ASPI from the link in your last post.
After re-booting it now says that ASPI has been corrupted by installing an older version....which doesn't make sense because I just installed 4.71 on top of 4.60.
Anyrate, here's a screenshot.

Ok, let's try this:
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htmQuote: I recommend using ForceASPI this way:
1. Run dumpASPI to backup your current ASPI layer
2. Run instASPI to install the new ASPI layer
3. Reboot
4. Run aspichk to see if everything worked OK
Some people report better success by running killASPI before running instASPI when newer ASPI drivers (such as v4.71.2) have been installed.
do the killASPI first then go as shown. We will get it straightened out.
Also i am wondering about your scsi host adapter. It may be bad, or it's software version needs updating. Here is a link to some of the host adapters;
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppbyproduct.jsp?sess=n... here is firewire stuff:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppbyproduct.jsp?sess=n... You could also go to windows control panel and go in to system>Hardware>Device Manager and right click properties on the adapters to see if windows is reporting an error with a device or controller.

I looked at the screenshot you posted, and it looks like we should have removed the old aspi first, then put the new one in, as it kept a couple of your 1999 files in that aspi. The killaspi approach should fix things. Remember to reboot after doing it. Here is a discussion on the whole aspi mess http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

Ok, I ran the killaspi program, then rebooted, ran instASPI program, rebooted again. Ran ASPICHK and Nero InfoTool. Both say that everything is working alright. (screenshot attached).

Well, in a last-ditch effort, I decided to hook the DVD burner up to my mom's computer to see if it worked.....and it did. I just archieved about 20 DVDs worth of data this afternoon, every single one worked fine.
I guess I'll just leave it attached to her computer and just tranfer my files over to it whenever I need to burn things (now that I've archieved most of my music and movies, I shouldn't have to use it THAT often).
Thanks for your help everyone, I guess my laptop just didn't like the external burner being attached to it.

So its not the burner, but it may be the scsi or firewire adapter that the laptop uses is bad. At least you can burn something now. I don't like externals, but you dont have much choice in a laptop. Keep that Sony media, its good stuff. Your last burn log was still not listing anything in that adapter section. Well, at least you found a way to use it, and not toss it out the window. :)
