I always burn at 8x and if I have 16x disks I burn at 16x with very little coaster output (no more than 4 out of 100 depending on the media). I see all these guides that say burn below 4x and all I can say is your burner SUCKS! I have lots and lots of games. In fact I get more errors when I burn at slower speeds. WHat I guess I am saying try burning as fast as you can if you get errors go down the next level until you find the speed that works best for your burner and media. I have two burners one Sony and one LiteOn. I burn at 4x max on the Sony (because Sony drives suck) and 8 or 16x with my Liteon.

You can burn at whatever speed you wish, but its recommended X4 or less.
I personally burn at x4, i can burn at x16 (tried it before) result = coaster :(

The x4 will obviously take longer, but, at the lower speed will usually have less read / write errors and will not skip.

I think that if you burn them at x16, im sure thats got to rip your PS2 laser? surely?

Well if Sony's suck, so do most Liteon and BenQ drives. Most Sony drive's are Liteon and BenQ rebadges. 16x might work for you, but in general that is not the way to go. Do your ever scan those 16x burns with Nero CD/DVD Speed or DVDInfoPro? I garuntee they will have more PIF's and CRC problems then games burned at 4x. You also didn't specify what kind of media you're using. If your using Verb's or TY's, then that's most likely why you've had so few coasters. I've burned 115 PS2 games to Taiyo Yuden's at 4x, with 0 coasters. People who know more about DVD Burning than I do, recommend 4x. I'll stick with that. Anyone reading this should to.

@Jsampson

Good for you, if you want to go as fast as the media stated (ie 16X, then burn at 16X, or for any future 20X, then burn at 20X), then go ahead dude, no one is stopping you. The chances are you're more than likely to create "coasters" burning at 16X than burning at 4X or 8X.

Additionally, I wouldn't be surprised if those 16X of yours starts to freeze or pixelate after a few weeks or months. Nonetheless, I could careless of what speed you or other people burned. I've been burning tons of dvd movies and PS2 games and I've come to conclusion that burning at 4X or 8X is the best, meaning "no coasters" and it produced great quality scores in results.

Again, I wouldn't be surprised if your scanning results for the 16X burned of yours turns out to be crap/anything from 0 - 50 on the quality score, PIE and PIF when using Nero CD-DVD Speed or DVDInfo Pro.

not only that, but it will kill off your burner eventually if you burn DVD's like that.

I only use Verbatim,Sony, Fujifilm, or occasionaly TDK. I found a killer deal on some Verbatim 16x disks and have been using those for most of my stuff. I get VERY little coaster output with Verbatims, even at 16x. I have had at least a 95% success rate. I must say dissappointed with the two Sony drives I had. Took one back and am slowly getting same problem again. Liteon has been making computer related equipment for years But have you ever noticed, when using Decrypter, the disk information on the right hand side? Now why would you burn at 1,2 or even 4x when it cleary says Supported write speeds 6x, 8x for a fujifilm disk? Shouldnt you burn at one of those supported write speeds? I avoid bad disks and coasters avoid me. I guess if your method works use it but I would argue that a lot of disk errors come from used, slightly abused games (perhaps from blockbuster). I also do not use Nero to burn DVDs I got lots and lots of coaster output with my sony drive even at slower speeds. They do have lots of great tools I must say but have no luck with their products. I will stick with CDDVDGen 1.5 and Decrypter.

Well i have a Sony DVD Burner (DRU-700A) and it is great.
I have a 100% success rate.
Your burning speed should be half the speed of the DVD,
That is just common knowledge, and good practice if you want games
to work, and to continue to work over time.
all i can say is, good for you. But since 95% of the people here
will disagree with you "burn as fast as you can" theory you obviously have not been here long enough to actually read a few posts about burning. Not sure what you even hoped to accomplish
with this post in the first place.

@Jsampson
if u burn to fast the disk takes longer to read then a slow burned disk, if you havnt relised that its your problem, and secondly, ur laser will also starting wearing out, data that is written fast is not 100% accurate, you keep burning at high speeds, but when you come to a major problem, you will regret what you did.

"I have successfully burned 95."
I guess that would impress someone, not me.
Between Xbox, PS2, and movies that is small potatoes
in comparison to what i have done. Are you not yet getting the point that EVERY other person who has posted to this thread is trying
to make you understand?

Hello-

I used DVD Decrypter to to make an image of Spartan - Total Warrior

Steps I took to make Image:

1. Open DVD Decrypter
2. ISO- Read
3. Put PS2 game (DVD) in DVD burner drive.........it read the disk
4. Then selected folder on Hard Drive for destination.........
5. Once it was done with making ISO image, I clicked ISO - Write
and selected My DVD burner drive.
6. DVD Decrypter says back up is sucessful.
7. Used Swap Magic 3.3 with flip top to HOPEFULLY play this game....

8. Nothing happens........... I just get a black screen. I use Swap Magic 3.3v and use Maxell or Sony DVD-Rs

Is there something I can do to make this work. I looked at the list of working DVDs and it had Spartan- Total Warrior on there.

PLEASE ADVISE

thanks,

Patrick

i backed mines up without a hitch, just read and write method, try rebuilding the disk or something, and burn at 4X, my backup worked on first burn.

1. make sure this is exactly how you did it.
http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id3.html
2. make sure that you are burning at the correct speed
4x on an 8X DVD, or set it to 1X for a 4X DVD
3. make sure your firmware on your burner is the latest one
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
4. make sure that the flip top is not screwed in too tightly, losen the screws in the bottom of the case a bit and see if that fixes it. many flip tops have had problems being too tight. mine i do not even have the screws in the bottom at all.
5. and lastly search this site on that game name and see if there are any posts where others had a problem in case it does in fact need to be rebuilt.

I always burn at least what Decrypter says the supported write speed is. I understand the confusion and paranoia caused by the burn speed issue. If I burn at the supported write speed of the disk I get less errors thab when I burn at a 2X speed. I agree that burning at to high of a speed cause more chance of errors that is why I only use Verbatims for this job. Verbatims do not support a 2X burn speed and when I have tried it for troubled games Results in a coaster usually.

JSampson, if that works for you, great. If ain't broke don't fix it. Verb's are good media. The media is responsible for your burn success, not the burn speeds, as I originally stated. Nobody's trying to talk you out of burning at max speed. Burn away. What we are trying to do is to encourage noobs to PS2 backups who're reading this to burn at 4x on an 8x DVD, or half of whatever speed the disc is rated for. This has proven to be pretty universally successful on the latest wave of 16x burners and 8x media. I guess you've had bad luck with Sony Drives. I got a Sony DRU 810 A about a month and a half ago and I love it. I've had 0 coasters so far. It's a rebadged BenQ 1640. Sony outsources a lot of their drives to Liteon or BenQ, both of which are excellent quality manufacturers.

@ BOOTME, im sure you are right, the faster the burn speed of the game the more pressure is put on the PS2 laser when trying to read the disc. This was told to me by the guys who modded my PS2 and have been doing them for a long time. They suggested burning as slow as possible to avoid errors, use good media like Verbatim, Ritec and TDK and preserving the laser life of the console through a slower burn
i use Nero express to backup, have never had a problem and use good media at a slow burn speed, no glitches or problems thus far anyways

Okay , there is nothing on Spartan - total warrior PS2 on how to make a flawless backup. I guess put this game on the list for non-working dvd iso. I wasted 3 dvds on this game...........this game is now a memory to me........
haha

Glad you got GOW working, for copyright purposes, I didn't write that guide lol. I just downloaded a version that was already rebuilt for that one. Shano I have a working version of Spartan Total Warrior. I have a Matrix Infinity modchip though. I burned it at 4x with DVD Decrypter to TYG02 and it plays flawlessly.
