I took one of my movies and ripped it with smart ripper, then used Merge Deluxe v1.0 to merge my vob files together (note only 2 merged together at a time) I didn't merge all of them together instead i opened tempeg and for video and audio source i set it to all files and grabbed my merged files one at a time and converted them to mpeg2 WITH ACTUAL DVD QUALITY ! (NO LOSS) ......................OK MY QUESTION ARE THERE ANY TOOLS AVAILABLE TO COMPRESS MY FINAL MERGED MOVIE.MPEG ? IT IS STILL ABOUT 4 GIGABYTES. MY GOAL IS TO MAKE ABOUT 5-10 COMPRESSED MPEGS AND MAKE A MENU AND BURN IT TO DVD+R USING AHEAD NERO ! ANYONE WHO CAN HELP , IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ! I AM ALSO WILLING TO SHARE ANY AQUIRED KNOWLEDGE OF DVD BURNING ! SO FAR TEMPEG IS THE BEST VOB TO MPEG2 CONVERSION TOOL I HAVE FOUND !

I don't think there is a practical way of just compressing the files without losing any real data. Well, a thing that i don't get about what u said is if u want to make a DVD-video disc or just a DVD disc with mpeg files. For a DVD-video disc u could use an authoring program that can also help you create the menus. One program that i like is Ulead DVD Workshop that also supports multiple bitrates (and movie sizes i think). Now, if u just want the mpeg files, why not just put them directly to the DVD+R - it is 4.7 gb right? (and u won't need any menus).

If u want to compress the mpeg files further, use tmpeg if there's a way or use codecs. The best video codec is divx. Try this.

But anyway i still don't understand why u want to make all that fuss to copy your own dvd??

I don't think u could find a nice way of compressing the mpeg files (as data, not as video) to a big percentage. U know the usual programs though, like WinZip or WinRAR. WinRAR's the best but if your files are 4 gb, they will just go to about 3.8 gb.

If you want any more help, explain what u want more

I was talking about making a dvd video disc . I have sonic my dvd which i will use to make my menus and stuff. When i said compress i was refering to a mpeg2 recompression tool, not to compress as data with a zip or rar tool. There is no fuss i just want to be able to fit more than one movie on my dvd+r's because it would be cheaper ! I just want to have dvd quality movies though or at least close to it.

Well, i've done this but it surely got me a fuss about it. To compress them, use ReMPEG2 or DVD2one (which is totally quicker) and then IFOEdit to do the .ifo jobs. You can find guides at http://www.doom9.org/

Then when u're done and u have problems with the .ifo files, as i had (but without menus), read my thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/28637

Good luck dude

As was said before, the process of compression has to come at the cost of data loss even if you change the format. Depending on the size of your original movie you will struggle to get anything over about 4.5gig to encode small enough to fit even two movies on a Dvd-r/Dvd+r without heavily degrading the picture quality.
