I have got my 360 running pretty sweet over my network with my main desktop PC running media centre.

media centre on the pc will play AVI files once the codec has been installed, the 360 doesn't. is there any way to trick the 360 into allowing me to play AVI files? either through my media centre PC or even burned to disc or even copied to the HD on the 360

No, i think itll need to be modded before you can install your own codecs on the X360.
