I myself have not tried these, but other members here have recommended these free burning apps:

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwcdburn.html

These programs might work decent, but in my opinion nothing beats Nero, and it is well worth the $50 it costs to register it.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Definately choose Nero. Amongst CD burning there are tons of other features.
