I have been using my laptop DVD burner to burn DVDs. I have burned about 200 DVDs with it and lately it has been sporadic in correctly burning them. Sometimes it will burn it fine, other times it will not burn it at all, it is getting worse and worse.. does this eventually happen and it is just crapping out on me?

as far as i know, anything man made wears out. 200 burns isnt that much, i would think u should get more. i read an article a while back that said the lifespan of electronics is about 3yrs. i guess ive been lucky. buy a new one and see if its the same. if so take it back and get ur mony back. if not then keep it.

Maybe your getting dust in it?
Thats what happened to mine and now it only has 50% success at writing.

HelloGuy,
It sometimes happens when you get a bad batch of media/new/unsupported media, a virus of some kind which takes up resources, Fragmented or full hard drive, etc.
Try to narrow it down. I would use some kind of tool, such as the stuff w/Nero which gives you an idea of the quality of media, the speed of your drives, etc, Did you just install something on it?

also, run a virus check/spyware removal program. When was the last time you did this?

If all else fails: back up your stuff (with an external burner) and reinstall OS.

I have been using the same media from the same batch with no problems.. they are authentic taiyo yudens from supermediastore.. do you think reinstalling OS and just starting fresh might work? I usually do it once every 8 months or so anyways.. It is on a laptop, so the drive is constantly being exposed to the outside when opened so it might be dust or something, any other ideas?

I bought an external dvd burner after checking into its expectant lifespan - 70000 hours according to the specs. Admittedly I think thats on the high side but as I only paid about £70 or so then if it lasts me a year I'll be happy.

I would definitely recommend an external burner - easily replaced.

I have a DVD ROM by LG that went bad after 13 mos of light use, just beyond warranty. I had a CD burner go bad even though it hadf been use hardly ever. Evventually DVD burners will go bad. At least the price has come down quite a bit. Look at it as an excuse to upgrade.

HelloGuy

Try blowing out your drive with compressed air sold in cans just for that purpose. And if you find it "bit the dust" instead of just being a "bit dusty," then I would suggest an external FULL SIZE burner in an external case. :)
