Hello, bought myself a sony dru-710A ddl dvd rw, plus some ddl disks with 8.5 gigs of capacity. My system is athlon 3000+, 2.1 GHz, 1 gig DDR ram PC3200 (400 hmz), and am having issues burning to the dvd. The nero software that came with it recognizes that there are 8000 mb to write to, the nero disk info tool states that the disk has a blank capacity of 7.96 gigs, so everything SEEMS correct. The problems are as follows:

1. I cannot get nero to add more than 3.8 gigs of data to be burned. It gives me a 'file not specified' (i think, not entirely sure, will have to replicate it) error.

2. In rooting about in the config settings, under expert settings, there is an area for DVD overburning. I thought that may be the problem, and I went to set it from the default 4600 MB to my desired 8000MB. It will not let me do this.

fwiw, I am also getting a "aspi file(s) are missing" error in nero, including after reinstalling it. I have solved that problem, however. Currently I've set the jumper to master, and it has it's own IDE controller on the motherboard. There are no other devices on the cable.

Anyone have any ideas? I can give a LOT more details if necessary. Let me know.

You've posted in the wrong section. You're describing hardware and software issues. Don't double post, ask a mod to put it in the right spot.

Just a quick question. Did you select the DVD9 burn option in Nero?

wouldn't dream of double posting. Point me towards a mod, and I will be more than happy to request a move. I'm looking for a 'thread tools' link, and just not finding it.

also, point me along the lines of adding an image.

I do not have that option on the screen that you do. My Nero shows the correct amount of mb to burn, with the proper warning lines and all, but I do not have an option to change the type of disks used. And thanks for the response.

The how to on doing screenshots is in the text of this thread. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/38/235934 It starts around pg 38 and ends on page 41.

What version of Nero are you using and which one of the apps from the suite? That screenshot above is from Nero Express.

nero 6, suites I've tried are express and burning ROM SE. Forgot to mention the OS, xp home.

in both suites when I attempt to add more than 3500 MB or so, the error that crops up is No Compatible File Found.

link to image is http://img371.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nero6qo.jpg. Doesn't look as if the way I formatted it [img]link" border=0> did the trick.

Again, how do I contact a mod?

double checked the cmos setup, and it's listed as the primary master on the secondary connecter, which is correct. The jumper is set to master (i've also tried cable select) and the ribbon cable connecter is labeled master as well. I CAN burn to it; I don't know if it burned at double layer or not.

thread teleported to Nero forum..

..and let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Nero version: 6.3.1.19 (Nero Express)
- too old, Nero 6.x is up to 6.6.0.18 now. What i will say is Nero 6.x has difficulty with the layer break on dual layer discs, not sure if it's been resolved fully even in 7.x as i neither do dual layer nor do i use 7.x. Without wanting to push you away from Nero there are a couple alternatives (free) that i read are fully able to deal with the layer break. But for now you should try updating your Nero to 6.6.0.18 and see if that helps; download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php

What you can do to test further (in Nero) is do 'simulation' burns so as to not waste any more discs, simulation burns go thru the motions with a blank disc without writing to the disc, and produce a log entry afterwards, good or bad

Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DRU-710A> Version: BY03
- newer version of your burner's firmware, BYX5, dated 25/10/05 is here - http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710
Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 4010111 (891:08.11, 7832MB)
Last address to be written: 25583 ( 5:41.08, 49MB)
- very strange..only 49MB to apparently burn to the disc..
Quote:
L0 Data Zone Capacity already set to 2005056 (1E9840h, 3916MB), requested last LBA L0 0 (0h, 0MB) ignored
- i can see that 3916MB is layer 1
Quote:
Start writing layer 1 at address 0 (0h)
- i haven't yet got around to figuring out how to fully decode dual layer logfiles but these last 3 lines look very much like Nero's not coping with the layer break

see how you go with updating Nero and the firmware, try a simulation burn and let's have the resulting section of logfile...

creaky:

appreciate the assistance. I will update to Nero 6.6 tonight (work now). will also update the firmware. Need to google how to burn a sim disk (glad that I can reuse the disk, because those dang dl disk, in a 15 pack, cost almost as much as the burner itself), but should be able to find out how. If not, I will repost shortly asking for guidance on how to burn a sim disk.

thanks again, will be posting later tonight.

no worries, i forgot to say how to do simulation..when you go to hit 'burn', you'll see a simulation tickbox just above it. tick that and untick burn (otherwise it'll sim burn THEN norm burn, highly annoying and completely undermines the whole point if you're not looking when you click (like i did recently) :)

okay, neither the flashing nor the new Nero update did the trick....when I simulated a burn of 3 albums, I got a 'disk not supported' type of error.....below find both the text the history log and the error log, respectively.....I deleted the prior history log from the post as it is already here.

Thanks again, creaky.

fwiw, that disk that burned successfully did not play in a regular dvd drive. Is this going to be a common issue? If so, I think I should probably go with something that can be a bit more universally read; this is going to be offsite storage for a lot of personal files, such as home movies, music, and the like.

A friend of mine says a lot of programs have problems with the layer break on DVD9 DL. He found that XCopy 5 works for him. Problem is, I know of no one selling that app at present. He says the video quality is good on his projector in his viewing room. I can't ask for a better testimonial. If flaws show, one would see it at that magnification.

Back to the problem at hand. You may want to try an app other than Nero or at least try the Nero 7 trial to see if they've got the bugs worked out of DL burning. They quit updating 6 when 7 came along, so the flaws in Nero 6 (though few) are still there. DVD Shrink is a freebie that will record videos to DL. I noticed you were trying to record MP3 on DL, I don't know how that will work out, but I don't think Shrink or a lot of apps were intended for that. If it's going to be that much trouble, you may want to revert to doing it on DVD5, a few more discs, but they're still much cheaper. I use RB/CCE for compressing movies to DVD5, so no probem with my movies either. DL recording has been a problem since they brought it out. ...that's from the proud owner of 2 DL burners who doesn't use either for DL very often.

appreciate the honesty. Think that this one is going back it's home, and exchanged for something a bit more versatile. Sounds like a great idea, the dl technology, but I had no clue that there were so many issues with it.

Ah, well, what's 4 gigs between friends, right?

Thanks,

You're welcome.

One thing that I've heard mention that sometimes helps with compatibility with standalone players is booktyping recordable media to DVD ROM (industry standard on DVD movies). I hear it works with +R as well as +R DL. It won't help if the DL isn't recording properly to start though. It only works with the (+R) format on certain drives (not all will booktype). Since you were recording MP3 with Express, those files would only be playable on some of the newer standalone players. Just because files are on DVD doesn't insure the player is capable of supporting the format. Till recently standalone DVD players wouldn't even play RW, now many play RW and MP3, as well as DivX and CD video and audio. So, be sure the player handles the format recorded. Here's a thread I noticed on Sony(s) and booktyping here at AD. You can probably google and find more. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/273724

Looking at the economics, I still think the 4.7 (DVD5) media is the route to take. DL media is just now getting to where it is low enough in cost to actually use. Before it was more for "special" projects. In the beginning the blank DL media was so high, it was almost as cheap to buy a second retail movie or program than do a DL backup. I've bought burners with the expectation that DL might become more mainstream, but to date that really hasn't happened. With the difference in cost though, there's no reason not to buy DL drives, and in fact finding drives without DL capability is becoming less likely.

so, to paraphrase, you are saying stick with the drive, but get some non-dl disks? Heck of a lot easier solution. I'm assuming that those would be able to be burned in a non-dl fashion, and therefore readable universally?

DL burners burn 4.7, but the old burners without DL capability obviously don't burn DL media. You pretty much have the picture; especially for the data files and MP3. For the large DVD videos you want to back up, special projects, you might want to go ahead and try a newer program to see how it works. But it get's expensive fast with DL coasters. As I said, give the Nero 7 trial a shot. You can download the trial at no cost from the Nero site, www.nero.com and it's full function, just has a timed period the trial is good for (no limit on trials though).

My friend who does DL on a somewhat regular basis said he had to switch to the XCopy 5 to get the job done and that app is currently not available that I know of. There was an XCopy forum on AD, but I don't know about that avenue. That was with some of the more troublesome movies. He's got the Nero Recode he uses for DL DVD movies along with DVDCopy 4, the XCopy5, and Rebuilder/Cinema Craft Encoder. He has quite a bunch of software. Most people don't invest in that much. I'm another of the software junkies though. LOL

Just one thing before you quit or try other software, have you tried Recode for the DVD Movies?

i have not. the majority of what i am storing either mp3's (50%), pics (30%), and random vids and other data such as taxes, writings, etc (20%).

What I like about keeping the dl burner is the same idea you have; someday, somehow, it will be 'in', and easy to use. For now, I think that I will stick with it, try burning some standard dvd disks, and see if they can be accessed universally. I would feel EXTREMELY stupid (not for the first time) if I backed everything up, the house burned flat, and I needed some data in a hurry and no buddies/libraries/work had a compatible player to play the disk that had the data.

Sort of like packing a survival kit without a can opener.

I will keep you updated, should be able to give it a shot this weekend. Got my anniversary, plus studies for A+, plus work, plus a 1 yr old, so time is a bit iffy, but I will post after a burn on a standard dvd disk.

again, guys, thanks for all the help. You were referred to my by some of my buddies at techsupportguy.org, btw. And you have lived up to the hype.

The data you're storing isn't that much for standalone DVD video players; i.e. the photos and business files. MP3 wasn't really intended for DVD video players, but is now incorporated into some newer players, not all. Most computers will read the DV9 and DVD5, so no problem once you get a good burn. In some cases I've seen read problems with certain software apps though. The batch software such as Roxio's Drag to Disc and Nero's Incd for example. You can have a recordable disc that isn't closed (multi session not finalized) and you have to have the same software to read it until you finalize the disc. To be readable by most programs, a disc has to be finalized. Those of us who do a lot of DVD movie backups avoid those type programs like the plague because batch writing apps interfere by staying active and keeping an active link to the drives. Interference caused by batch software is a big problem with novice video enthusiasts. We suggest not loading or deleting those parts of the recording suites, if backing up video movies is going to be a pursuit.

By the way, supported tags and syntax are listed above the Message box where you post to a thread. I'll give you a quick example, the following is a screenshot of notepad because you can't post the tags in the forum itself, they are active.

yah, we'll see what happens with a standard dvd disk.....keep you updated on it....I would imagine that it would work fine, but I also imagined I wouldn't have any issues installing a freakin' dvd rw.

shows what I know, eh?

Just put in a new Plextor and if I'd been in a hurry I could have done it in about five minutes or less and that's checking and setting the jumper. LOL The PC picked it up and I'm using it. I guess some of us have all the luck. ;)
