do you have a slim or fat ps2?
when you get that message, it usually means that the ps2 knew you put in a burnt disc.
V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

Just a side note here, a few of those games needs to rebuild (Prince of Persia, Resident Evil 4, GOW).
Here's how to boot your PS2 backup games via Swap Magic 3.6 and Fliptop:
<> power up your PS2 console
<> Eject tray and put in your Swap Magic DVD disc and close tray
<> wait 5 seconds until you get to the loading/booting menu
<> open up from Fliptop cover (top) and take out Swap Magic dvd disc
<> put in your PS2 backups from Fliptop (top) and close Fliptop
<> press X to boot
That's it... it's only roughly 1 minute, easy as sippin' on some Hennessey. Enjoy it!!

Is it really necessary to power up the console before putting the boot disc in?

Yeah, provided the disc is burnt onto high quality media I don't see why the disc won't play if you use the setup above.

Then in this case, you didn't burned (or rebuild) it right. Any PS2 backup games that was "successfully burned" regardless if it's a straight ripped and burned or rebuild doesn't stated "not a valid PS2 disc".
The chances are if it says; "not a valid PS2 disc", then there is something wrong, either it's your PS2 lens or your backup is not properly burned.

Is your firmware up to date?
92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
