Can't burn 4.42GB - why not?

I just downloaded a set of AVI files over BitTorrent and I want to burn them to DVD-R. Whoever put the set together appears to have had this in mind, because all together, they are just about the size of one DVD-R.
Just about.
The set is a LITTLE too big, according to Nero, to fit on on DVD-R. Like 1% too big. That has happened to me so many times that I'm starting to think I'm doing something wrong.
I keep downloading sets of files that add up to JUST over the capacity I can fit on one DVD-R. Is everybody else able to fit 4.42GB on one DVD-R and not me? Why wouldn't someone squish their files just a LITTLE bit more so the entire set would fit on one DVD-R?
1) I'm using Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.3 with Ritek "4.7GB" DVD-Rs (I realize this is not their true capacity).
2) Windows reports the files I want to burn as a total of 4.42GB
3) Nero reports the files as a total of 4,645,368KB, which Google calculator says is = 4.43016815 gigabytes
Why do people keep uploading sets that are just BARELY too big for me to fit on one disc? I must have some problem, because P2P people are usually pretty smart and considerate about that stuff.

...and the weird thing is that Nero's "disc information" tells me the disc has an available capacity of 4.483GB. So why won't it burn 4.43GB of material?

There are settings for overburning in Nero rom. That's probably how the original was done before being split. I believe its in expert features under options

Huh. Cool. Thanks. I don't know how I missed that... must be blind.
It wants me to set the maximum allowable size in MB. I set 4592MB to cover this disc. I guess I'll see if it works. Does anyone have a suggestion for a maximum size? Does it depend on your media?

Hrm... well, overburning isn't working. I get an "illegal disc block" error when I try to burn. I've dialed the max down as far as possible and it's still failing each time. I'm burning disc-at-once, is that correct?
Any other ideas?

i dunno...in Nero 6 it tells me that my files are too big and if i want to compress them to fit, which i do..im burnig right now or id take a look in Nero Vision, but there might be a check mark toggle for 'fit to disk' or such...
ahh..wait in Nero Recode (for burning files already in DVD format like .VOB and ifo) it has a fit to target toggle that i had to check before it let me proceed..buts still not sure about the rendering side of things...yet...

Keep in mind that manufacturers quote the capacity of a writable DVD disc in decimal (base 10) rather than binary (base 2) notation so a 4.7 GB disc stores 4.7 billion bytes [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1000 = 4,700,000 KB ÷ 1000 = 4,700 MB ÷ 1000 = 4.7 GB] . Expressed in binary notation (as is typical with CD-R, CD-RW and most operating systems) the same disc has a capacity of roughly 4.38 GB [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1024 = 4,589,844 KB ÷ 1024 = 4,482.27 MB ÷ 1024 = 4.38 GB] .

It's actually really easy to use Google Calculator for those conversions, too. Just type "1,234,762,986 bytes in MB" and it will spit out the answer. Very cool.
So I'm willing to accept that the disc size is limited and my files are too big. I just can't figure out why so many people upload files sets like this, that are 1% too big to fit on a DVD-R.
Has anyone else encountered that?

You don't want to overburn on a DVD like you do on a CD, burning too close to the edge of the disc on a DVD gets into the "unreliable" area of the dye. Try using Recode to compress the movie, set target size to 4300 and all should be well.

manufacturers also make out that you have 4.7 gig so then you think your getting more space.Woulds you buy a 4.38 gig disc for the same price of a 4.7 gig disc. nah you'd go for the bigger size, every one would.Its just a marketing ploy.
But they also include the disc properties of where the disc was made etc on it
