dl DVDR or AVIs?

So here's the scoop:
Been doing this torrent thing for a bit and I'm trying to decide whether I want to continue back up my DVD's using avi's or dvdr format. (Because we all dl these merely as backups right? ;)
Anyhoo, I'd be re-encoding the avi's after I dl them so I could put em on a dvd. But the issue is how much quality am I really losing if I dl an avi (then encode it) as opposed to dl a dvdr straight? Am I really going to notice it?

From what I've gathered, most avi's are encoded at approx 1000kbps and dvdr's have a video rate of about 3000kbps. Am I off?

Id just get the DVDR itself. Save yerself the hassle and time of dling the AVI, reencoding the AVI ,mastering a dvd and burning the dvd. Too many steps too much extra effort IMHO.

aas for quality loss, you always lose quality going from one format to another (DVD to AVI and vice versa - AVI to DVD) Depends on the source AVI just how much quality lose you will notice when converting back to DVD. Also depends on what application/method you use to convert AVI to DVD. you use the el cheapo quickie method, you are going lose more quality than using the slower more professional method using more sophistacted programs / methods
