Just purchased Swap Magic for £16.00 and i have to say it is the biggest con i have seen! Tried my import PS1 games...nothing( and before anyone says, yes i used the CD disc and i did the slide tool right), also tried an American import (Dragon Quest 8) and guess what? Yup, nothing again. So advice: Get your PS2 chipped( naughty, naughty) or buy a NTSC PS2. Absolute garbage.

Yep, to play PS1 backups/omports I think you need something else... It's called breaker pro.... google for it, or have a look in the cd forum, there might be something about it there.

I'm sorry you didn't get what you wanted.. but You can't blame swap magic for your mistake.. it doesn't say anywhere that it will play ps1 imports or backups... not that I've seen anyway.

Yes but when it says imports it means PS2 imports as that's what the console is... Not PS1

swap magic works for definite.

this is what a swap magic seller tells us about swap magic

When using the slide tool in conjunction with the Swap Magic Discs, you will be able to play:

PS2 CD-R backups PAL or NTSC from any region

PS2 DVD-R backups PAL or NTSC from any region

PS2 Original import games from any region

no mention of ps1 games.

so before you go on blaming others do some research.

as someone appropriately said "live and learn".

Thing is most people think because there's a CD version then that can be used to play Ps1 backups, i know i did. Maybe they should put on there site not compatible with Ps1 games is it that hard?

Paddy, thats what ive got, mate. An import copy of Dragon Quest 8 for PS2, and it wont work. I didnt realize you couldnt play PS1 games. In fact, i have the package with me and it says on the back, "...playing PS1 and PS2 games as it should...". There, from the horses mouth. You CAN play PS1 games with it.

Ok, well it doesn't say that on it's site... doesn't say it on my version of SM3.6 either.. and many others on here will tell you this is the fact too.. where did you get it from?

On every site I looked at too it NEVER mentions about playing ps1 backups or imports.

Yes to play the PS1 games you will need Breaker Pro from
what i have read.
Although i did find a few sites that said that Swap Magic
WOULD play PS1 ORIGINALS.
No mention of back ups or imports.
This is how most sites list it
"Plays all CD & DVD games. (PS2 Software only, not PS1 games.. For this you will need the Breaker Pro disc)"

Like I said before I'm sorry if you didn't get what you wanted.. I had a look at the site.. i'm in UK too by the way.. and this is EXACTLY what it says
Quote:
Swap Magic 3.6 with Slide Tool

With the slide tool you no longer have to install a mod chip like Magic 3.0 No Solder, NEO, Messiah or DMS3 to be able to play your backups or original import games. You do not even have to open the console, therefore your Sony warranty stays intact. Normally when installing a backup solution, you have to open your console, and "split" the warranty sticker on the back. That's all history now....

The SLIDE CARD does not make any changes to the internal system of your PlayStation2. So after and when using the Slide-Card your PlayStation2 is operating completely normal.

When using the slide tool in conjunction with the Swap Magic Discs, you will be able to play:

* · PS2 CD-R backups PAL or NTSC from any region
* · PS2 DVD-R backups PAL or NTSC from any region
* · PS2 Original import games from any region
* · No mod chip required!!

# In short the procedure for booting a backup is like this:
1. Insert a Swap Magic Disc in your PlayStation2 (use CD or DVD version)
2. Wait for the screen to say (load program/insert disc) - that takes a few seconds.
3. Use the specially designed Slide-Card
4. Insert your CD or DVD backup or import game
5. Use the specially designed Slide-Card
6. Press X on joypad and the game starts - and you are now playing backups easily without a mod chip!
Doesn't even mention PS1 at all, sorry.

They do however have a link to another prduct that they sell, here http://www.ecskent.co.uk/ps2/html/breaker_pro.html
Quote:

The best methood thats works the best for PS1 backups is the knife methood. Works like a charm for me. Make sure to use CD-R for PS1 games.

Let gaming last forever......

I always suggest DVD-R as that's what works best for me with my V5.. and I go with retekg05 or verbatim(taiyo yuden dye) discs... never ever have coasters with them... I use DVD Decrypter to get the iso to hard disk and then use Nero in "burn image to disc" mode at 4x on the excellent 8x media... not one coaster, unless it's been user error.. like today when I accidentally shut off the power to the house while burning :(

dvd decrypter is great, and I can use it too... but I prefer the fact that Nero gives me more control over how fast the disc is burned.. some people say that even if they set it to 2.4 or whatever it varies between 1x and 6x that it actually burns at with DVD Decrypter.

Get you r discs from this place http://www.svp.co.uk/index.php

They are great and it tells you the media code.. or 2 possible media codes in some cases as the brand of disc sometimes ahve 2 or more different makers and therefor different dyes. I stay well clear of them though.. I like to know for definite what the media code is.. I'd go with these http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=228

These http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=219

or these http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=221

But might be worth getting a sample pack or 2 first to test out which media is best for YOU.

Thanks Paddy, youv've been a great help, mate. The reason i asked about the media and type to use is that i have a DVD+RW drive, does that mean i can only burn + discs?

yes, unfortunately.. you could try DVD+R and see how you get on.. a small pack just to start with.. although if they don't work in your ps2 you could still use them for movies/data or music.
If your ps2 doesn't like the DVD+R discs, there are a few things you can try to "fool" your ps2 into maybe accepting them.. will explain more after you've tested them, no point in confusing the matter yet.
If they still don't work after trying a few tricks, you might have to buy another dvd writer.. not that big of a deal unless you're on a very tight budget.. they're only around £35 including delivery for the latest drives that'll pretty much do anything.

let me know how you get on with the DVD+R discs.. remember to get good quality only... here's a few suggestions for you:-

Paddy, ive just checked a thread on Booktyping, think that will help as i will be using DVD Decrypter to burn it. My drive is only about 6 weeks old, its a Phillips. Never had any trouble doing movies/tv shows. thanks for all your help, feller!

If your drive supports booktyping it should work...

Are you using a Fliptop or Slide Tool? if you're just trying to boot with swapmagic itself.. It won't work..

So bottom of the story is,swap magic will only handle ps2 games (cd and dvd ps2 games) and if you want to play ps1 backups you have to get breaker pro? im glad this was brought up because i was curious myself about that.

Breaker Pro or an older PS1 ver of Gameshark..

and you need to be using a fliptop or Slide Card in order for swapmagic or Breakerpro / gameshark to work properly...

Yes, booktyping can help in some cases.. that's what I was going to suggest to you. But what discs you use is much more important in my opinion... if you try and use crappy media you're more likely to get bad burns, errors like skipping/freezing etc and even if they do work for a while, the chnaces are that they'll stop working after a while or even harm your laser.
Try some good quality discs like I suggested earlier and try a burn like I suggested... then if it doesn't work out ok.. look at booktyping. You may want to check out my checklist guide too, to make sure you have DMA enabled on your IDE controllers and installing WNASPI32 for use with DVD Decrypter... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/288475
