hi everyone,

feel free to post about whatever hardware for mac&pc you like !!

But my question is about harddrives.
I have an old G4 400mhz, with a 10 gig hdd, i want to repace it with a new HDD, but am not sure what to buy.
I therefor hope that an PC hdd is interchangeble with a Mac computer !!
I sure hope someone can confirm this, cause that'll save me lots of trouble !!

Thnx in Advnce

is this a powermac or an imac?

powermacs i believe on that will only go to 120gb.. and ide connectors..

any HD you can find in the store will work. they dont come formatted for either platform.
once you get it into the machine you install mac os....

something like this...

http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~741453.asp

the apple site only has this to say about the pci graphics g4s...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43111

you may have an agp machine.. the 400mhz machines could be either one

here is a chart to help you find what you have.... very nice reference tool...

or you could always check out

assuming that you do have a tower I would highly recommend going to macsales.com and buying what you need from there. I did that with my server recentilly, tooka 400 Mhz with a 13 gig HD, and 192 MB of RAM, up to a 1.2 Ghz with a 300 Gig HD and a gig of ram. all very reasonably priced I thought.

and you can find out what version you have by going into the system profiler (Different places between OS 9 and OS X) it'll tell you what all you have in the computer.

OH BTW, thelox is right, without purchasing a new harddrive controller the biggest HD you'll be able to use is 128GB. but those are fairly inexpensive as well.

you can do the 300gb drive.. but you are going to need a controller card..

http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~538430.asp

you can then put in the 300gb drive.

most hd come standard with ide, and thats what that controller card does..
