Been having problems with the computer randomly shutting down. As a result of a bit of deducting and reading, replaced Motherboard, CPU & Powersupply (Had spare ones kicking about so thought what the hell.) Computer now seems fine, not shutting down at all (until I tell it to anyway) I formatted the hard drive not too long ago and reinstalled everything just to clean out the crap.

I'm not sure if the problem i'm having with the burner has anything to do with these issues. However, here's what's happening.

Using Nero 6.6.0.6 (fresh install), (or the 'Sonic' software which was bundled with the DVD/RW drive for that matter) I try to burn say a data CD or DVD. The computer does it's thing and it all looks ok. Sometimes nero tells me it's performing a 'Short lead out', sometimes says nothing of a lead out. When I get the CD/DVD, to physically look at, you can see that 'something' has been burned. When trying to read the disc, there appears to be nothing there at all. Tried reading it on my laptop (seperate system) and still no joy. Must have gone through about 20 blank DVDs - none have worked.

I recently have been messing with DVD editing and ripping. The other day I got a message just after installing a new DVD ripping program saying something about ASPI not being installed. I just clicked the 'next/yes' buttons as habbit dictates. Have since uninstalled this software to try and fix my burner problems. Wondering if that's got something to do with it. After finding out about the burner problems, I got the latest Adaptec ASPI drivers & installed them, no joy. 'Updated' XP with the installation disc, thinking that it would overwrite any crap or at least put in anything which was missing. Also updated the firmware of the DVD drive about 2 minutes ago and still nothing.

Here is the last logfile from nero. Please help!!! I have a full backup of all of my stuff on a seperate hard drive, so a complete format (while i don't want to) is possible. HEEEEELLLLLP PLEASE!!!

Thanks guys

T. Graham

well, for starters, here is one problem... the version is out of date
Quote:
Nero Version: 6.6.0.6
6.6.0.18 is available
go here to update..

http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

only install the first two updates..
Quote:
Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DRU-530A> Version: 2.1g
i confirmed that one..
Quote:
Physical memory : 511MB (523760kB)
Free physical memory: 282MB (289324kB)
Memory in use : 44 %
kinda low on the memory department and 44% in use....
close down all un-needed applications, no multi-tasking while encoding or burning.. free up some memory, run a defrag often (maintenance anyway)

Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
burning waaaaay too close to the edge... set it back to around 4300mb

Quote:
Disc Manufacturer: RITEKG - 05
nice media ;)

try some of that and see if it helps... your update is the most important i see that needs the most attention..

Thanks very much for that.

Although i'm pretty good with computers, i have no in depth experience of advanced burning techniques. So here's a real basic question for you.

When you say I'm burning way too close to the edge - what does that mean and how do I change these settings?

I'm really curious as to why my computer is doing this, it's never done it before and has written many CD/DVDs in the past?! Weird! I'll let you know how I get on. Downloading the first two updates from Nero as we speak.

Thanks for your time!

are you using Nero only to burn dvd's or are you using other programs in conjunction with Nero?

ok, lets start from scratch....

what is it that you are trying to burn, copy, back-up... whatever??
you say you are using Nero, and Nero alone?
pull up another error log and paste it here, see if you can get the FULL log..
make sure InCd is not installed, if so remove it using nero's clean tools, you'll have to do a reboot after that..

My computer is going ape whenever I insert a blank CD or DVD now, it hangs. I reckon there is some problem with the system in general here! I'm going to format the HDD & reinstall XP. The first thing I'll do is install Nero and update it, then try to burn a disc and see what happens.

I've been trying to burn data discs basically. InCd wasn't installed and I couldn't get the computer to even attempt to burn another disc as when a blank was inserted it basically hung like crazy! Thanks for your help, i'll let you know how i get on. Should only take about an hour.

How do you change those settings you talked about before - burning too close to the edge?!

Cheers again,

TG

not sure exactly how it went in Nero 6,i have 7 now, its different in lots of way.
open the burning rom, up at the top, there should be a drive icon, open that, do the drop down to optiops, somewhere it will say overburning, set tick that and set it to 4300mb... mine is @ 4360mb, but i have other programs that enable Nero to burn, using their info..

i would suggest to just download DVD Shrink.. set it up in there.. and enable Nero to burn

After the re-install of XP, nothing has changed. I remembered I had a spare CD/RW kicking about. Just hooked it up and it works.

I guess that the computer is ok, and the DVD/RW drive is screwed!!

What are your thoughts!?

if thats what you think, un-install the driver, then re-boot, it will reinstall... if still the same problem... its very possible the drive is dead..
Quote:
Also updated the firmware of the DVD drive about 2 minutes ago
assuming it was not working before this update... unless the firmware ruined the drive... doubtful, but possible.
does the system recognize the drive?

How would I uninstall the driver from the DVD/RW? Are you talking about the firmware I updated? How do you do that in XP?

Thanks a lot for all your help, you're the man! I really appreciate it.

Regards,

Tony

go this route..

start> right click my computer> right click properties> hardware tab> device manager> find your drive> highlight your drive> at the top, there is an x with a computer, thats the uninstall.. click ok then do a reboot, it will reinstall at start up.... windows wizard will do the rest, follow the on screen instructions..

Sounds like you just need to take your computer out behind the barn and put her down. LOL

Good luck! You might want to back up your files and just do a clean install of WinXP and then put your programs back on. That usually helps me and takes less than 2 hours.
