Putting downloaded files on DVD+R- HELP!!!

I just got a DVD burner and can't figure out how to put downloaded files on DVD so they are watchable. Making a backup of a DVD is not a problem, I bought DVD Xcopy for that, but I want to download video clips and record them to DVD. I have been on here for days trying to find out how, but all I can find is help on creating Cd's, not DVD+Rs. Should I look for certain file extensions? Do I have to get software to convert one file type to another? I'm new to this so forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but as you can see....I NEED HELP!!

your downloaded files are probably avi,divx or xvid.
you need to change them to dvd compatible files then author them back to vobs.
