I'm a student at a college using their internet.. I was wondering if there's anyway I can speed up my torrents besides turning off firewalls.. I use BitComet and the fastest I can get my downloads going are around 20 kB/s but it's very inconsistent.. I'm new at this and when I try to follow guides and i put my ip address in, I just get the college login page.. I'm not really sure what routers are, there's a lot about them.. I'm thinking they're the box you plug your internet into in which case, I don't have one.. Do you need one? Any ideas?

Unfortunately CaKarst you're behind the college switching board. All that is is a massive board where all the internet connections for the dorms come in.

A router is a sort of smaller version of this network. Say for example you have cable internet at home. To get it to work, you'd have a modem. No problem. But what if you want to have multiple people connecting to that modem? That's where a router would come in.

But, sadly you're in a college dorm where all you have is a plug in the wall where you plug your computer in. Am I right?

If this is the case, then there's nothing you can do short of getting the residence to open a port for torrenting....ah ha ha ha. But you never know, so ask around. But on your end, there's nothing you can do.

Wish I had better news.

Like I said, ask around. Someone may have found a way around it. Torrenting is more popular than people think sometimes :)

Oh, and on top of that, there may be a shared network set up in your dormatory where people living there will have their movies and music set up on this folder. You'll just have to find out if there's a shared network around and if you can get onto it. (It was available in my buddy's dorm when he was in residence)

Post back if you found anything. :)
