Recent problem backing up w/ DVD Shrink / Decrypter

I have been successfully backing up DVDs w/ the DVD Shrink / Decrypter combo for quite a while w/ an almost perfect record. Just recently, my success rate has dropped - several of the backups do not work or do not play smoothly - they are very fragmented and broken up during playback.

I suspect that the problem lies in either the drive or something in the encoding process because I have made multiple copies from the same iso file - one will work fine and the other will be fragmented.

I have burned a lot of DVDs using this burner w/out any kind of cleaning / maitenance & was thinking this may be the problem. I don't really know what products work the best for this. Does anyone have any thoughts / suggestions on this?

What are your burner details, make, model etc and what brand of media are you using.

I am using a Sony DVD RW DW-U14A and I used to burn @ 8x, but after the problem started & I read that 4x is safer, I switched to 4x and, although I have not burned a lot since then, the problem seems to have persisted. I set DVD Shrink to 4400 when I compress.

I have used both Verbatim 8x 4.7 GB Shiny Silver DataLife Plus DVD-R & Memorex 4.7GB 8x DVD-R media; the discs that have been acting up lately are Memorex & I have also recently read that Memorex DVD-Rs are weak, but they have worked pretty well in the past and this problem is fairly recent, so I am stumped. Maybe the wear & tear on the drive mixed with the crappy media? Could this be a cleaning or firmware issue?

It is probably a combination of things. The Memorex do suck. But the verbs are Great. I would make sure my firmware is up to date. I would also note: The Newer DVDs have been heavily protected, in fact, that may be a lot of your trouble. Also burn speed. 4x is usually safe with most DVD Media. Try AnyDVD for FREE for 21 days, while you're at it, try CloneDVD 2 too for 21 days free. Both from www.slysoft.com.This combination is tried & Proven to Back-Up ANYTHING out at this time with Excellent results, provided you use good media & don't burn too fast.
