Alright... where to begin. I bought an Athlon x2 +4400. When I installed it, the entire computer ran extremely slow (much slower than my previous +3200), and it took Windows 3-5 minutes (literally) to boot up. I was running on XP Home SP1. I updated to SP2 and downloaded a hotfix to apparently fix this problem. Upon doing this, however, things just seemed to get worse. Windows still takes just as long (if not longer) to load, and when it does, my entire desktop disappears! Icons, taskbar, all gone. All that's left is my wallpaper. I am only able to open IExplorer through 'run' in my task manager. I am very frutstrated at this point.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem? Can anyone give a suggestion? I would be EXTREMELY eager to get any help I can get. It will be very apprecieated. Thanks again.

did you reinstall windows when you changed the cpu or did you just continue using the old installation?

what motherboard do you have? you may need to change some jumper settings on the board to make the cpu be recognised properly

I had to re-"authorize" it, but yes, I am still using the same installation.

The mobo is Asus A8V deluxe. The bios recognizes the processore just fine, so I dont think that is the problem. Thanks for the response, by the way.

in that case id do a fresh install of windows as thats probably whats causing the issue. you set up the hard drive for a single core processor and all of a sudden there a dual core on the prowl and im guessing all you did was fix the MBR to make it boot. windows can be picky about these types of things.

reinstall windows and see how it goes
