im looking into buying a hi-def tv but i have been reading and have heard all kinds of diffrent things. Such as it is not a good time to put the money into a hi-def because they are changing so quickly, instead just go and buy a standard def. for a much cheaper price. Is this true?

I have also heard that weather a tv has hdmi input or not it dosent really matter because something new will probably come out soon??? So do you think hdmi inputs are a big deal?

I am intrested in purchasing a 27 inch or larger from circuit city, and i do not wish to spend more than 600 dollars (not counting extra warntes or tax). But i really dont want to buy a hi-def if it is not a smart time to buy. And space is not an issue for me so i dont mind buying a crt style.

Another issue is should i buy a wide screen because i have heard rumors that all of the programing will be formated in 16:9 mode

i was thinking about these 2 models made by samgsung if you can reccomend anything better please list it :)

That is just a rumor started by the confussed and mis-informed. 1080p sets are coming to market which have a much better picture than the current 720p sets but they cost alot more.

Thats another rumor. HDMI is here to stay. DVI is going out of fashion everywhere except front projectors.

That is a half truth. DTV can come in any format (including 4:3, 16:9, 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i). The truth is all HDTV programming will be in widescreen but every channel won't be HD, ever!

I recommend the Samsung 30" Slim-Fit (widescreen).

instead of buying a hi-def with a 16:9 ration i think i will buy a hi-def with the standard 4:3 ratio and also buy a 3 year warntee :) so when every thing is in 16:9 i can get a tv with 16:9

on the other hand your saying it is not a bad time to buy a hi-def?

Right. Do what your buget will allow. All the standars are in place and have been since 2003. Although displays that exceed the standars are available. The highest DTV standard is 1080i. Yet 1080p displays are starting to become available. With 1080p set you can be sure that all 1920x1080 lines are being resoulved. That is the only thing that is changing.

I will also say that CRT based HDTVs can resoulve every line in a 1080i signal for cheap while the new 1080p DLPs and LCoS sets will set you back at least $4,000 bucks for a 50" screen.

ok so now i understand the whole resolution thing but what about the wide screen format in the future

will all the programing be in the 16:9 mode in the future, so a 4:3 tv would display all programing in letterbox

i am concerned about this because i have heard that if the tv displays alot of letterbox programing the black lines at the top can burn in to the screen

i would prefer to buy a 4:3 crt type tv because they are somewhat cheaper
