Has anyone had the opportunity to see a movie in a digital movie theater? I got my first glance of the future today, I saw the Chronicles of Narnia at my local Cinema De Lux theater, and I must say that it was better than a home theater projector setup but fell a little short of film in picture quality.

The digital theater I was in used a 3-Chip DLP projector at 2K (2048x1080) resolution. I didn't think the DLP projector, at 2K resolution, was as good as film but it did look alot better than a 1-Chip DLP home theater projector at 720p (1280x720 progressive scan).

You can really see the advantages of a JPEG-2000 presentation vs an MPEG-2 presentation. Because the delivery system was completely digital and encoding was done using JPEG-2000 standarts instead of MPEG standards there wasn't a single artifact and there where no cigarette burns to signal the changing of a film real. Also, and probably most importantly, the picture was rock solid from begining to end like the first time a movie on film is showcased on openning day! There is another resolution standard that is higher than 2K labled 4K (4096x2160). It is rumored that moive shot with a 4K camera actualy looks better than a movie caught on film. I can't wait to experience a 4K movie!
