Well, this could be cause by:
Weak wireless signal (long distance from router, you can check this on the toolbar at the bottom right of the screen.
Firewall (check the settings for this on your computer, this all depends what security software you have installed)

check your firewall settings and reset everything in intrent options to default.
you may want to try using a different patch cable

If browsing is slow, it's not a firewall, it's a weak signal.

Same thing happened to my brother-in law...
He thought he was on a Cable modem... but instead his PC was still using Dial-Up from his modem... LOL
I told him next time to make sure his modem isn't plugged into his wall outlet just incase so as to prevent PEBKAC! Problem exists between keyboard and chair.
@moonslash
Exactly how is your PC setup for internet? Wiring, etc.?

are you splitting the wire anywhere to account for phones by the computer. if so that can cause a major impact on the speed. I have cable and was running 56k for a while because i had a splitter for the phone line. in other words if you have a splitter going ever rid of it.

Hi!
To say thanks for all the great posts here, this might help you--
(BTW, is there any real technical (not user) manual for the SB5120 modem on the web ? Its hard to find real
manuals for modems!! )
Here is how I solved my Bit Torrent problems, after moving:
Using
Comcast HSI hi-speed internet on cable, in
Castro Valley, California.
My old cable modem was a RCA/Thomson DCM226, that I bought on a Comcast deal with RCA in 1998?, and it worked fine in my last CA location
(San Ramon) on Comcast, when it was apparently capped at about 1.5 mbps (bits/sec.) due to its firmware
settings, that I think hadn't been updated from Comcast when they went to 3 mpbs and higher.
But in the new location, the new regular tier service is 6.6 Mbps download & 384 Kbps upload. (kilo bits
per second). Apparently, they upcapped my old modem at this rate when it was initialized.
So I tried the modem without my router to be safe, but got continual bit torrent + also fast shareware
download problems.
1.
I monitored the network with ctl-alt-del Task Mgr, the networking tab.
Something would reset the network (cable modem) rate to 0 (OFF!) every 100 - 120 secs, when I did any high speed xfer, like a zdnet.com download.
On Bit Comet or Bit TOrnado (Bit torrent) downloads, it would do the same, even at low speeds!
Downloads from ZDNET would scream at 1 or higher MBps, then abruptly crash to 0 after 100 - 120 seconds,
very repeatably. Then I would have to unplug the modem to reset it, and start over.
Bit Torrent also would scream up to 500 KBps (Bytes per sec) if there were 100 peers, then crash every time at 120 secs or so.
After 2 months of part time working on this, I was getting ready to take an axe to the whole setup.
I thought Comcast was detecting Bit torrent, or I was running into traffic leveling or some secret cap on BT!
So I enabled encryption of headers in Bit comet, didnt help.
I assumed the old modem would be fine, since it was DOCSIS 1.0 or 1.1, and had a 10+ Mbps max speed...
I tried changing the modem cat-5 cable, taking out a splitter,
I cut back all parameters in Bit COmet, to minimums, that didnt help at all.
It turns out the old modem couldn't handle something, maybe the signal level, speed or connections at the new location.
I just got a new modem as a last-ditch effort,
a MOtorola DOCSIS 2.0 modem from Frys, a surf-board SB5120,
since MOtorola is a great RF device mfr + has the broadest cable modem line, + this modem is approved by
Comcast, + the Zoom/ other modems were bad-mouthed on the web due to having a bad Texas Instrum chip set.
ANd DOCSIS 2.0 can't hurt, may be needed in future.
This was $75 from Frys in Fremont with a $20 mail-in rebate, a repackaged modem that had been returned, but
it looked new and it was $3 off, haha.
>>THIS IMMEDIATELY FIXED the problem
with no other changes! BTW The modem is Cat-5 10/100 ethernet connected to a router and then to the computer (a Athlon 64 Compaq Presario, refurbished from Frys, works fine).
And this was using a old LInksys BEFSR41 router between the modem and the computer, with no port forwarding enabled. But forwarding did help later.
2. Bit COmet parameters (settings):
(I cant find any way to reset these params to default states in Comet !)
Since I was sort of surprised to see no info in Bit comet on how to set its settings, here is what works for me !
> Since I played with all the parameters in Bit Comet, I started getting bad download speeds, for one main
reason-
I set the global max upload rate way above my UPLOAD rate on the cable, to 100 KBps,
since I was thinking the upload was the same as the download rate.
This made for fast uploading, but downloading stuck at ~ 1 to 20 kBps. instead of ~ 200 KBps or higher. (bytes/sec)
So I took the Comcast upload rate = 384 Kbps, divided by 8, and got 48 KBps max upload rate.
I set BItComet to <80% of this bandwidth, using your great help here, 34 KBps,
then lowered it to 28 KBps max upload total rate, and this works GREAT!
> So these settings work great on Bit COmet:
OPTIONS/PREFERENCES:
CONNECTION:
GLobal max download rate: No limit
Global max upload rate: 28 KBp
Max simul download tasks: 3
(Could be 1: I try to only do 1 torrent at a time unless it has << 50 peers).
Listen port: randomly chose one by pushing button.
And then I put that port num in the port forwarding page in the router. And put it in the Windows firewall exception list. ANd also set router fwding ports to 6881 to 6999.
TASK:
UPLOAD:
Max upload rate per task: no limit
min upload rate per taks: no limit.
ADVANCED:
Add DHT network as backup tracker: Yes (I think the .61 ver fixes this so this can be enabled? Not sure.)
CONNECTION:
Enable DHT network: yes.
Enabled uPNP port mapping: No (I set static IP in my XP machine + configed router.)
Max connections per task: 225
GLobal max upload slots: auto -- these auto settings give me: 5-10 upload slots usually.
Global min upload slots: auto
Max half open TCP connections: 10
Protocol header encrypt: auto detect.
These settings work great on COmcast so far !
My FireFox browser isn't slowed down now by BT, and torrents start gathering peers right away when started.
*** Thanks to all the posters on this board for the great info + help !!!!! ***

1: read the forum rules above about posting & emails.
2: if got a manual from your internet provider with modem than read that as there should be a troubleshooting section as i got 1 from rogers who is 1 of my internet providers.
