I'm working on a 2-3 yo WinXP Pro SP1 machine which works well, no errors running any of the installed software. It's connected to a DirecWay Satellite Modem DW7000 via built in NIC.
Yesterday I did a 'Shields Up!! - Service Ports Probe' on Gibson Research's (http://www.grc.com/default.htm) web site to check my 'stealthyness' on-line, something I've done many times. Much to my surprise, this computer appears wide open. Only 3 ports are stealth'ed and only 3 are closed. All other ports are open.
I tried setting, unsetting, re-setting the XP firewall...no change. I checked for viruses using AVG Free and McAfee on-line test...no viruses. I checked for AdWare, malware, etc. using Ad-aware 6...nothing shown.
I downloaded and installed Zonealarm and set the 'Highest' setting for both internet and trusted zone...no change OR may have added one port to 'stealthed' can't remember.
I installed two different Linksys internet/network routers...no change.
Anyway, does anyone know what this problem might be? All but six of my ports are 'open'. I want them to be closed or at least hidden! How do I find out how to do that?
(I've never had this problem with earlier versions of Windows so is it XP related)?
