I've been searching the web for a good site for amm of my dvd questions and this one seemed to be the best, I hope it works out.
Anyway, I have searched and read many posts that have virtually the same problem, but have still not found a solution.
Machine: Dell Inspiron 9100
NEC 6500A with 203D firmware upgrade
Problem: When I use dvd decrypter (or nero burning rom, or roxio) I get an error when trying to write to the disk. I am using an ISO created by IMGtools (tried shrink from the video_ts folder as well). I have updated the firmware and played with the settings but cannot get it to work.
Now I cannont burn anything (data or iso) on my Fuji DVD-R (8X). It shouldn't be the disk either because I have been using them for while now without any major problems. My burner seems to have suddenly become incompatable with the blanks for burning.
My DVD dycrypter log is following:

I was wondering if it had something to do with the line that says BURN-proof enabled.
Sorry for the second post, I haven't been able to figure out how to edit anything but the thread title.

Burn-Proof is a proprietary technology from Sanyo. It's goal is to prevent buffer underruns. It may or may not be the problem because you are trying to use Decrypter to burn. You didn't mention having to shrink the ISO, so use another piece of burning software instead of Decrypter and see if it works. Nero has an option to disable BURN-proof as well.
How recently did you flash the firmware on your writer drive? Have you ever burned a successful DVD after the flash?

DVDSNDICT:
I cannot find the option to disable burn-proof in Nero. I just updated my firmware to what I believe is the latest after I read some forums. Nothing has changed; I still cannot burn dvds in anything. Roxio's box for write speed has no options, and will not go on because of this. Nero says it "cannot start disc-at-once". Decrypter was aformentioned. DVD Shrink failed as well.
I didn't have to shrink the iso because it was pre-shrunk to fit DVD-5 and in a video_ts folder. I just used ImgTool to make an iso (and tried DVD Shrink as well).
I cannot burn data dvd's either. Roxio Disc-At-Once states that "the process is cancelled or the disc doesn't have enough space, free space = 4.38GB"
I also tried system restore but this did nothing. Like I said before, a week ago it worked with everything including dvdxcopy platinum, although I hadn't tried it with dvd-deycrypter before.

That media appears to be good, according to www.videohelp.com, however, your problem could very well be the fact that you are running Roxio and Nero. As a rule they both have some of their software running in background and they cause conflicts with one another. My suggestion is to get rid of Roxio, since Nero is the prefered software to use by the majority of AD members. Also, Nero installs Incd (I think that is the name), which should never be installed and/or be running when you are ripping/burning.

Well, DVDShrink uses Nero to burn anything, so saying Shrink failed is just saying that Nero failed to burn.
Sytyguy is right, but from what I've seen this Roxio/Nero conflict causes system instability, and what we're seeing is some sort of "in-program" issue. Besides, it still doesn't explain why he can't burn from Decrypter. You want my humble opinion? You fucked up something furious when you messed with the firmware. If you're using windows XP, I would suggest using the Rollback feature and see if that corrects the burning process.
Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager
Find your burner, then...
Right Click, selecting Properties > Driver Tab > Roll back driver
Other, more recent OS's are probably something like this.
Tell me what version of Nero you're using, and I'll tell you where to disable BURN-proof.
Cheers, good luck, and go ManU.

Quote: NEC ND-6500A - 2.24 (for drives with 2.x firmware) / 4.24 (for drives with 4.x firmware) / 203D (for Dell OEM drives)
(Known Firmware: 2.22)
The above are the firmware updates for your drive that I found at http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php So the question is, which firmware did you have previously?

I've uninstalled roxio and sonic. I upgraded to Nero 7. Still no dice. I couldn't have messed anything up when I flashed the new firmware as the problem existed prior to the flashing, and nothing changed afterwards.
I tried the driver rollback, but since I have not installed new drivers (and windows can't find newer ones) there was nothing to rollback to.
sytyguy:
previous firmware was 202C. I upgraded to the 203D because my computer is a dell.
Still no dice, guys. I tried the discs and iso on a newer dell 9300 inspiron with DVD Decrypter, and it worked perfectly.

ih8poker,
Sorry, but I am out of thoughts. Considering all the troubleshooting you have had to go through, might be time for a new drive.
I personally can highly recommend a Benq 1640 burner, it comes with software that permanently booktypes your drive to DVD-ROM, if you buy OEM, then you can download the software (Qsuite) from the Benq site. However, you must purchase +R discs to be able to booktype.
Best of luck,
Rich

@ih8poker-
That's why I asked early in the thread if your problem existed before the new firmware. Could be your drives last grasps for breath. Im out of ideas.

I can't understand why it would just quit. It isn't more than 2 months old. I'll try to talk to dell, but I doubt I'll get anywhere.

Talking to Dell is like debating socio-economics with a piece of wood.
If you have any sort of long term care plan, its probably something that you could send out and have fixed. Otherwise, it's a good thing drives aren't that expensive. Why does anything break? It's either defective, wears out, or you broke it yourself.
