Hi,
Well, I got my burner replaced (by Gateway), my computer manufacturer. I have an LG Burner or HL-DT-ST DVDRAM in other words. I checked with NERO and it's capabilities are that it can burn DVD's at up to 16x. Now, I am trying to burn a DVD at 8x, but even with NERO or DVD Decrypter, the speed is really slow and it takes around 40 minutes to burn when I choose 8x. When I choose 4x with NERO, it takes less time than when I choose 8x (at least it used to, until yesterday). Now, when I am burning a DVD to DVD, sometimes it just fails, or even when it succeeds it shows the right size when I insert it into the computer, but it doesn't work like the one I burned it from (in the DVD Player). Until yesterday, burning at 8x from the computer worked just fine, but I could never copy from DVD to DVD at 8x or even 4x, it sometimes takes longer and sometimes does it without any problems. Sometimes it fails and I get a fixation error. What the hell is wrong with my burner? Can anyone help?

Regards,
DiRect

Sounds like your DMA slipped into PIO. Follow this guide:

Hi,
Dolphin, the DMA for my DVD Burner is off. Does that affect the burning in many ways, and why? What is DMA, can someone please explain and what is the need for it to be on?

Direct Memory Access (DMA) is a function whereby a peripheral or integrated component can access the RAM in a system directly rather than having to use the CPU as a go between.

Parallel / Programmed Input/Output (PIO). The alternative, slow and inefficient data transfer mode, where the central processor transfers data byte for byte or word for word. This requires many processor commands for each data word and therefore causes a high and unwanted processor load.

DMA data transfer is always more efficient and requires only a few per cent of CPU time. It uses hardware to control data transfer directly to system memory, and only require initial memory allocation and minimal handshaking from the CPU. A further advantage is that performance is device rather than system dependent. DMA-capable devices should give consistent performance, regardless of the system they're attached to.

Hope this helps!
