250GB HD recognised as 128GB by windows

Hi! I'm having a bit of trouble with my new HD. It's a Samsung SP2514N (250GB). Once it was installed, the BIOS auto-detected the hard drive as 250GB (so far so good), but in windows XP it's recognised as a 128GB disc.
I can't create a partition larger than 128G wich is very strange, so I thought it might be possible to create more then one partition...but no.
I've been looking around for a solution, but the closest I got was an article on the microsoft knowlage-base that described the exact problem I'm having, but their solutions did't work.
The HD is formatted as NTSC (because I know that other file systems doesn't support larger than 32GB or something like that), and I've tried to format it several times.
I would really apriciate if someone could help me with this problem. It's a bit frustrating when you can't use all the storage that you've paid for.
(I maybe should mension that I have an 80GB drive as master, and I've set the jumper on the new 250GB drive to SLAVE...if this make any difference)

you do have a common problem that I have seen before but for the life of me I can't remember the fix exactally. I do know it has to do with Windows. So just hold tight it will come to me, or someone else.

Yes follow ddp page and also make sure service pack 2 is installed which allows you to use the full capacity. Also in the bios make sure lba is turned on and 32 bit transfer is turned on under ya hard drive.:>

you could just go start>control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management>find the partition not used and format it, you'll have a partitioned hd but you will get the rest of your hard drive back. and hey- you can save stuff over there with slightly less worries about losing it.

The problem specifically relates to the windows installation that you are using. When the first version of windows XP came out, the biggest harddrive forseen on the market was 137GB. It is for this reason that XP only recognizes your drive as 128GB like you say. Any of the above solutions will work, but your best option is to get a more current Windows XP installation, one that already has Service Pack 2 on the installation disc. Also if you do install the OS as you have it now, and later download SP2 from windowsupdate, it will fix the problem and correctly recognize that your drive is 250GB. The problem with the latter solution is that you'll have to partition and format the remaining 122GB that you did not format when doing the installation.
All of the above solutions are valid, you should definitely try to get an newer installation disc of Windows XP.

Download Windows Service Pack 2 and once that's installed the drive will be recognized immediately. I have an older Windows XP disc and when I reformatted my PC recently and stuck in a 160 gig drive without SP2 the same thing happened. As said before, with the first version of XP it won't recognize anything above 128 gigs.

Tanks guys! I'm gonna try this out...but it really seems like my old version of Xp is the problem as you say! I will try to upgrade it and come back with an answer of the outcome (hopefully good)!

After some problems with the installation of the XP service pack 2, my missing disc space is finally recovered!!!! 232,88 GB (I guess this loss on 17GB is normal cause of other circumstances)

yeah some hd with that much gig on it require a software somtimes to fully use it (if this can help other people having the same prob)
and when you format you lose some space especialy when you do only 1 big partiont try to make like 4 or more you'll recovert some gig back
but if you want to stay that way you can just that you lose some but having a lot of partition is kinda annoying for some people
