I have archives of data DVD-R's that I made a a few years ago with an external DVD-R DVD drive on a machine I no longer use. They were made on Windows XP. I have since switched to DVD+R still on windows.

To mount these files I hooked the old DVD-R drive. Some of the DVD?s showed my files. I retrieved them successfully by copying of the DVD. Others only showed a .bin file. I know that a .bin file is essentially a disc image. There is no visible .cue file.

My assumption is that when I backed up the now unreadable files-- I clicked ?compress? which created a disc image. These created a .bin file.

This drive was generic, has no brand, and no way to track down the original drivers for it. Although, as I said the discs do mount on windows up. I assume there is something preventing it from recognizing / seeing the data files on the disc.

Here is what I have tried thus far?

I copied this .bin file to a local hard drive.
I tried to burn this local .bin file using Nero. It will burn a disc but the new disc is unreadable.

I tried renaming the .cue file using the method on afterdawn: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/7976

Then I tried burning again. Doesn?t work.
I tried using Toast on OSX. Toast will not recognize the .bin file or the .cue file.
I tried convert .bin to .iso using ?bin2iso? then burning the .iso. No luck.

I have a PC Windows with a DVD+R drive. I have an external hooked up to that. I also have a Mac OSX with toast. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

Try downloading a copy of ISOBuster and load the Bin file in it then extract the information in the BIN file to a folder.

Below is a link to the site.

Thank you for the suggestion-- I tried using isobuster but unfortunately I keep getting an error something like...

Access violation at address 0063b7B in isobsuter.exe write address 050BC30C.

I tried to open a local .bin copy from the original dvd and the dvd itself.

1) I open image file.
2) I get this message...

During mounting of the disc only a session track layout could be found. No file systems nor files and folders could be found.

Assuming you are looking for certain missing files we suggest you run the option.

?Find missing files and folders?

?Find missing files and folders? I select make it so.

5) At least 2 files will be created...A .IBP .IBQ

All of this eventually leads to the access violation error.

This is seperate. I also found the DVD-R model LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 GDHG, the driver no longer is available on the company website and I wrote tech support. Waiting to hear back.

Yikes!

Was not able to get isobuster to work. Once it converted the disc to an iso it was unable to reburn a readable disc. I have learned that the DVD-R may not be a true .bin file. ALthough I was able to copy the .bin file i was told that this file is not necessarily a true disc image once copied to a local drive. WHat would be ideal is if I could recreate as close to the original environment it was burned in.

The burner is LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 GDHG. When originally burned it was on windows 2000 with Adaptec easy cd/dvd creator. They were burned with compression which allow for extra storage. Which in hindsight was a bad idea being the compression format is no recognizable. The DVD's appear to be .zip'd so to speak.

Someone recommend using the current version of Roxio (which bought adaptec) because they believed it would have the proper drivers etc. I have but it still doesn't recognize anything more that the cryptic .bin file.

I have tried all sort of conversion programs. The discs just show up as .bin. I know this .bin is normally a disc image which usually can be converted. I have tried bin2iso, isobuster, Nero, written .cue files in a couple ways. When I burned then cue or iso files I would then reburn only to find the discs are totally unreadable.

Windows xp is seeing the discs but can't provide any options for unzipping. Is this a software issue or a driver issue? The company no longer carries the driver: http://www.liteon.com/liteon/index.jsp

I feel like I've tried so many options...Can anyone help?
