Hi, for some unknown reason my pc will not shut down, unless i hold down the power button for like 5 secs.. I mean i hit the shut off tab & its logging off, saving your settings, windows is shutting down, & then nothing. Computer just sits there & will not shut off unless i do like i stated above. Anyone have any ideas on how i might rectify this little problem? Thanks in advance!!

It may be time for you to use your Windows CD and use the Repair function from the Recovery Console .

Wow, you went way over my head there. If i remember right, i don't think a cd was sent with my hp pavilion, beleive it is built in the d drive. Wish there was little easier solutions than messing around with recovery discs. Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

All HP Pavilion are sold with Recovery CD's !

Recovery Cd's have a repair function you do not loose anything.

If you can remember the last time your system shut down normally, use the system restore setup and back up your computer to that date.

Something has changed in your registry that will not allow for a proper shut down. System restore should fix the problem for you.

Press Start, Help and Support, then "Undo Changes" that will put you into the restore program. Select a date that you KNOW your computer was shutting down properly, then let the program run...

Ya that was what i was planning on doing if all else failed. Was holding off due to the fact was i just recentley cleaned out my computer, using system mechanic, & besides not shutting down its working really well, with a few exceptions. Guess to get the wife off my back, I'll do a system restore. Thanks man

Dang, My system won't let me perform a Sys. restore. Its because i have to shut the unit manualy rather than by normal means i believe. tried 3 different restore points, none would work. Guess i'm screwed!

No, you're not screwed yet. You still have a few things to try.

First thing is to disable all of the optional startup items on your task bar. This is simple. Press Start - go to the top and find the icon that says "Support" and press that. Go down to "System Configuration Utility" press that. On the right, press Start System Configuration Utility.

In the window, find and check the box (Selective Startup) then open the tab that says (Start Up) - on the bottom select (Disable All) then close that utility. It will tell you that you must re-start your computer to make the changes. Do NOT re-start yet...

Open the Task Manager (Right Click on any open space on the bottom tool bar.) Click the "Processes" tab and look at what's running. Press the User Name tab and look at what YOU have running. Highlight and press "End Task" on everything Your Name is next to. Shut down all Virus Programs and all Spy Ware programs. Shut down everything that isn't SYSTEM. After that, try a re-start. If it works, you can then try Restore again.

He's right. The quick way to get to System Configuration is to press Start, Press RUN, then type in msconfig, hit ENTER. That will get you to the proper screen.

When you start to shut down running programs with Task Manager, do NOT shut down "explorer.exe" or everything will stop.

And just for your information, there is a windows trouble shooter program that tells you exactly what I am telling you here. It's available in the "Help and Support" section under "Performance and Maintence" "Startup and Shut down Problems".. I have not read it for a few years, but I think it more or less follows the same steps I outlined here; perhaps not in the same order..

Hi again, tried all mentioned above. For some unknown reason, no matter what restore point i try, my system cannot complete a system restore. It was pretty scary this a.m. when i 1st tried to start my p.c. I had a completley black screen. One line message insert system disc & hit anykey i think. Fortuntly did a restart & it booted up normally.
