I have a recorder which is capable of burning 8X dvd speeds. however with Nero 6 I can't change the drop down box at all. Only 2X is available, CPU memory and everything is fine. Why?

Could be the media only supports that speed. Are your trying to burn a file from your hard drive? Which prog in Nero are you using?

YOu do know taht the disc has to be in the drive before it can give the burn speeds right? And is your DMA on?

Similar here,
I'm using Asus 1608p2s drive and TDK 1-16x 4.7GB DVD+R
and the write speed I can select is only up to 8x (in spite of both media and drive should be able to write at 16x)
Ah, all this in Nero6 btw.

I'm gonna have to just repeat what I said above. The disc has to be in the drive before Nero can give you teh possible burn speeds. Firmware up to date? DMA on?

Here is a guide to fix your DMA, if it is in fact off:

And here is your firmware just in case:

dma mode is on thanks
I've double checked the firmware version manually, it seems the Nero reports false - there was a newer one. Mine was 1.22 and a 1.37 was available on the asus site. Upgraded it, but it's still the same.

Thanks for the help.

At this point I decided that I don't care. DVD rams are useless for videos for the fact I can't get them off the dvd in any usable formats, speeds are bullshit, and I wasted long hours to find this out, and paid good money for things not capable of doing what they are supposed to.

It seems to me after this few days that this dvd-writing market is in a fair state of chaos. Even market leaders are struggling to keep up, and releasing very very buggy programs. (the ulead one is especially shameful)

I'm off have a good one guys.
