Hello, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for this scenario:

Sister-in-law bought a new BenQ 1621 (maybe 162i, not sure) external 16x DVD-rw. When she hooked it up it said something about the cable being lower than needed so I assume it's reading a 2.0 USB and that her laptop was 1.1. I wasn't sure how to check that. In the meantime I hooked her up with the CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD trials to get her started on burning. It took her 30 minutes to get to the point of burning (about the same as my computer) then when it switched to burn, it took 2 hours! Does anyone know how to:

1. Check to see what her computer is set up with as per USB (Ican't believe 1.1 would be that much slower)

2. Give any advice on the DVD settings as per firmware/drivers/etc... that might be leading to this problem.

My laptop has 'USB 2.0' written in tiny lettering next to the connector

Hi,
USB 1.1 transfer rate = 12 Mbits/sec
USB 2.0 transfer rate = 480 Mbits/sec
So in theory USB 2.0 40x quicker. USB 1.1 not really suitable for DVD writing at any speed.

Thanks for the advice guys. Zebadee, that might explain alot about the slow time. I will check the back of the unit next time I see it Catfreak. Is there a cheap way to upgrade a laptop from 1.1 to 2.0? Maybe an external device?

Update. She bought a USB card that slipped into her computer and changed the speed to 2.0. Took 18 minutes to burn instead of 2 hours plus...
