1st things 1st: WinXP/Pro SP2, P4 w/HT 3.4G, 4GB DDR2 Ram, Sapphire (ATI) RADEON X700PRO 256MB PCI-Express x16 video card, 160GB SATA HD, InFocus SP4805 Projjector as a monitor (highly recommended even with this issue)
I built this for gaming about a year ago and have really enjoyed it, but I always wanted a bigger screen. I have a home theater with a projector already mounted to the ceiling so I figured I would use it and simply DL my movies straight to the HD and have myself a nice HTPC.
The Problem: My projector's highest resolution is 1024x768 which is really nice for watching movies, but not so much for using as a monitor. When I hooked the projector to the video card via DVI cable the computer adjusted it's resolution to the 1024x768 but it looks like crap. It looks as if it is being forced into a 16:9 format. 4:3 is worse, and letterbox is PERFECT, but it cuts off the top and bottom of the screen as most letter boxes tend to do to fill up the screen. If I drop the resolution to 800x600 the projector adjusts itself to that format and it looks nice but everything is VERY LARGE and therefore annoying. I am using ATI's Catalyst Control System and it recongnises the projector correctly. When I watch a movie from the hard drive via PowerDVD it looks perfect. I guess it knows how to compensate for this, just wish my surfing the web could. Gaming, playing Counterstike show true and clear and works like a champ as well. I am lost now. I consider to be pretty proficient with computers but this is beyond me.
