I have a Sony DRX-810UL drive. It works fine, except it cannot burn on RiData DVD-R DL. Thus, I tried updating the firmware using Sony's website (version 2.0D) However, after rebooting my machine, I can no longer access the Sony drive. Checking back with Sony's site, it seems that even "touching the keyboard" can make the drive "unusable". Perhaps this is what happened.

Fine, so how do I fix this?

Try uninstalling and re-install the Sony. By the way, Sony's support web site lists Verbatims as the only DL media it will burn....

I'm not what you mean by "instal" the Sony, because there is no driver to install. I just plugged it in, much like a USB key. (Is this the difference between "firmware" and "driver"?) Nor could I even attempt to put the firmware onto the Sony, simply because the computer didn't know it was there.

What did work was plugging the Sony into the USB 1 port, rather than the Firewire which I normally use. Then the computer recognized it, and I could then re-instal the new firmware -- this time taking care not to disturb the reboot. Now it works both on the USB 1 and Firewire. (After diagnosing w/USB, but before fixing, I assumed the problem was the Firewire port. But plugging other peripherals into the Firewire presented no problems. So, it must have had something to do with the combination of the Sony + Firewire, until the problem got fixed.)

The only problem now is that there seems to be a permanent drive icon in Windows Explorer under My Computer which indicates the (previously) bad drive. This is in addition to the icon representing the working drive. So now I have 1 more icon than I have drives.

What I meant was to "plug it in" again and let Windows find it and do it's thing. Which is what you did... I've seen reports that on usb 1.1 you burn speed will be 1X, so use firewire if it works. Good that you got it going again...Good luck.
