I recently bought a new lite-on DVD+-RW drive from here
When I put a DVD in the drive some DVD's it reads fine and does exactly what it should. However other DVD's that I put in, do not work at all.
I can hear the DVD drive going, as though its trying to read the DVD,but after a couple of minutes it stops and fails to read the disk at all.
My Computer shows my DVD drive as being empty.
I know that this is not the media as it happens on a number of DVD's, all of which I have tried and found to work perfectly on my laptops DVD drive.

I have just updated to the latest firmware which i believe is 008?
1. I hope you know something about computers. Under your device manager remove all CDs from the list. Allow windows to reinstall them. and make sure under your DVD properties that enable Digital is checked.
2. Did you install the DVD yourself, make sure that the pin is set to CS, if you have 2 DVD/CD it is better to have the writer connected by itself, if not possible make sure it is the first device. Connected to the end. The middle connection is for a second Device.

Which ones work and which ones don't?
For example, are you saying that Store bought DVD's work and burned DVD's don't?
Are they DVD+R media or DVD-R media?
Which brand and what programs do you use to backup, if any?
Contrary to opinions on CS select, not all PC?s or ribbon cables like CS. I always use Master and Slave on optical or Master/ Single on ATA HDD?s. Some brands will conflict with others on an IDE ribbon cable and might suggest special settings in that case, but that is usually when you setup new hardware and you find that your older device shows as missing once the setup takes place.

Blank media works fine, the drive always reads them whether they are burnt or empty. What I am having problems with is store bought DVD's. Half of the ones I try are just not being read by my DVD drive (the ones that dont work however work fine on my other dvd drive on my laptop).
To back-up I use dvd-fab express and DVD Shrink.

I will work through the suggestions in your post, how do I set the pin to CS?
If I have updated the firmware could I still send the drive back?
As Scubabud stated some cables dont like the CS setting but this is all part of troubleshooting. A couple of years ago CS was very picky but as long as your cable is fairly new (you should use the one sent with the DVD Writer) you should not have any problems.
The good thing about CS is that you are allowing the motherboard to determine the master drive and not letting the drive force the motherboard to be the master.
On the back of the cd rom is several connection. one is for power (4 pin), one is the IDE connection (ribbon)40 pin one of the middle ones is missing)), and then the ribbon select pins and then the sound connectors (varies for different brands, . The Ribbon select pins are actually jumpers and usually have the letters "CS"=Cable Select, "SL"=slave and "MA"=master. There should be a plastic jumper connecing one top pin with a one bottom pin. Carefully pull off this connector and move it to "CS". Do this with both CD Roms Connected.
Remember one end of the cable goes into the motherboard and then the farthest end is your masterdrive and the connector in the middle is your slave. A DVD Burner should always be your master.
Just remember troubleshooting computers can be frustrating but it is alot better than it was 20 years ago.
