Hello,

I am putting a system together and have come across a problem while installing Windows XP x64. The installation goes fine until the GUI part of the installation. When it gets to "installing devices", I get the blue screen of death. The following are the components that are currently plugged into the moboard:
Motherboard: Abit KN8 Ultra v 1.1
CPU AMD 64 3500+ socket 939
Video Card: MSI rx300hm-tdi28e
HD: Maxtor 6L200M0 sata
DVD=RW drive
Floppy

The system was running great, and I installed 32 bit windows with no problems whatsoever.
I've read up on the problem, and I think it has to do with the SATA harddrive not being recognized correctly by x64. The floppy drivers that came with the motherboard are NVRaid drivers for x64.
Do I have to have the harddrive running in raid to get the drivers to work? I have tried installing windows both in raid mode and not in raid, and I get the same results every time.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do?
Thanks in advance

Hello,

No.
It is only relatively recently that people are using only a SATA drive, with no IDE harddisk at all.
I still like to use an inexpensive IDE HD, say a WD 80GB/8MB (UDMA4) to start the PC... (hey, everyone needs multiple HDs on different controllers anyway, right?)
You say you have up-to-date SATA drivers for x64, but...?
Note that KN8 Ultra BIOS 14 (dated 2005-11-30) is the latest available.
This mobo is very new and has all the latest 'candy' - 1394 Firewire, Gigabit LAN, SATA2 etc.
You are trailblazing into uncharted territories, installing WinX64 on it - but others must be, too...
Check here

and keep up with the community, FAQs and (if needed) ABit tech support.
There's somethin' going on - you'll figure it out, good luck.

Well...

I hate to be the person running in unchartered territory, but here is the progress that i've made with the situation so far...

When i try to install Windows x64 using only SATA, the windows installation does not recognize any harddrives whatsoever. Basically, it tells me that there aren't even any harddrives connected. SATA is enable in my bios, and the bios recognizes the SATA drives fine. The problem seems to specifically to the windows installation not properly recognizing the SATA drive.

I did have the windows OS x64 operating for a limited period of time. In order to get it running properly, I did a quick format (the one that takes 2 seconds, yes i know this is bad, but i was sick of waiting for the full format). Also, when the OS x64 was running, I had the harddrive configured as a Raid drive in Spanning Mode. I am really not sure as to which mode the raid should be in, but i know the "mirroring" modes will not work, as that is used for multiple drives. This leaves me only with the two modes "Stripe" and "Span", the latter of which is the one that worked. The strange thing is what happened next: Since I only did the quick format to get the OS x64 running, I figured it would be best to go back and run a full format with the current settings and reinstall the OS x64. When I tried to reformat/reinstall low and behold I recieved the blue screen of death when "installing devices", the same as the initial proble described in previous posts. To this point, I have not been able to get x64 up and running again. Every time, as with the previous, i still get the blue screen of death when installing devices in the GUI of the windows install. It seems as though the one time that i had x64 running was a fluke of luck. It has not run since.

So, I am about at my whits end with this problem. I have tried every combination of Sata/Raid that I can think of. The system is now running fine using Windows XP 32bit.

I am fairly confident that the problem I am experiencing is due to the SATA harddrive. Here is a Microsoft Q & A page that specifically addresses my problem. Too bad their solution for the problem is irrelevent.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/64bit/russel_x64faq.mspx

If you click on the "Q" that says "The installation goes okay, but the first time it boots up, I get a blue screen? What do I do?", this Q describes the problem I have in detail. If you can properly translate the answer to this problem, as described on the page, I would surely appreciate it. The answer is of no help to my n00b self.

Thanks for reading, any suggestions still much appreciated

If you are only running one hard drive, then you can't run RAID. RAID is a redundant array of independent drives. You can't have an "array" of one drive. Go into BIOS and disable RAID. When loading Windows 64, do you have the floppy with the SATA drivers on it? Not the Nvidia RAID drivers, the SATA controller 64 bit drivers for F6 installation.

See this thread for some answers for your problem http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=5872

No, that I believe is the problem... the floppy that came with the board is for NVRAID x64. I don't believe there are any SATA drivers on it, and I could not locate and SATA drivers on the ABIT-USA website after extensive searching. I will try the method as discussed on the planetamd64 site later, thanks for the help I will keep you informed on whether or not it worked!

Just go to Nvidia and download the latest Nforce4 drivers for win64 and then open the sata drivers folder and make a floppy to load the sata drivers when the operating system asks for it with the press F6 prompt.
I've loaded Win64 on loads of PCs with Nvidia chipsets, its just as easy as 32bit windows.
I suggest you also check every other component on the setup to ensure you have the 64bit drivers available.
