Your DVD or CD Writer suddenly slowed down?

Just sorted a problem out on a mates PC and thought that this may be of use to someone else.

Basically his DVD writer just started taking ages to write a disc. On checking his system properties all IDE Channels were set to auto detect and Use DMA if avalable.

On using Nero infotool i noticed that is DVDR drive had DMA turned off. So XP was not detecting it.
It appears that if XP recieves 6 or more DMA errors from either damaged discs of overburned discs that XP will switch the DMA support off and go to PIO mode.
To sort this out you need to reset the error checksum out in the Registery

to do this run REGEDIT and goto the following key

KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It ha subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002 ect.Normally 0001 is the primary IDE and 0002 the secondary but this can change under certain circumstances.By looking at the DriverDesc value you will see which IDE channel you are on.

Delete either the MasterIdDataChecksum or the SlaveIdDataChecksum depending on whether the divice is set to master or slave ( you can do this to all the channels if you want, it shouldn't hurt). Reboot and the drives DMA capabilities will be redetected by XP.

You may need to check system properties to set the auto detect and DMA setting on again.

All should be ok now.
