hello all,
the message: "system error, there is an IP address conflit with another system on the network" appears on my window couple times. I did not how how to fix yet. One night, I left the comp. on all night and the next morning It was dead.. Now I hit power button, nothing.... I unplugged and plugged in again...still nothing. Anyone can suggest what I should do first before I bring it to the shop...
thank you in advance.

when you say dead no lights no nothing ?
if so take it a repairer
the ip conflict means that two people on your net work are trying to use the same address try setting your network adapter to obtain ip automaticly in your network connections in the control panel
try leaving your power cord disconected for 1 minute and disconect all printers scaners etc it may get you going

langthang - have u got experiance with computers, what are the specs of the machine, do the fans spin/spin for a micro second/nothing happen at all, or is it just start up but nothin on the monitor.
The best thing u can do is probley check the motherboard and reset the cmos by taking the battery out (Dime/10p shaped thing) or finding the jumper by consulty the manual.
and come back to us.

unless its a computer you built yourself i wouldnt even touch it if its not coming on - just take it back where you got it from and let them fix it for you, no point voiding your warranty is there
Studio Comp: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC ~ 2.35GHz runs at 40 celcius idle and 48 under stress (aerocool GT1000 really works!), Asrock K7VT4A , 1024MB Dual Channel DDR 400, MSI Nvidia FX5200 128MB OC ~ 600MHz mem 350MHz core,80GB SATA + 200GB SATA + 120GB IDE, 7.1 Channel Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound and midi interface. 19" Sony SDM-HS95 TFT monitor - sweeet
Comp2: AMD Sempron 2400+ OC ~ 2.0GHz (Stable), Asrock K7S41GX, 512MB DDR 333, Onboard Graphics, 40GB Maxtor IDE
set of monitors on the way soon :P
Google is your friend...
WorkComp: LAPTOP, intel celeron D 2.4GHz, 256MB DDR, 20GB hd. NO SCREEN IT WAS SAWN OFF :S (bag of crap)

unless a person is experienced with computers I would never advise them to open their case in this situation it appears that there is no power available to the board voiding any warranty is only one consoquence of messing around when you dont not what you doing I've seen many computers destroyed by well meaning friends and family in the fifteen years Ive spent working in the computer repair and network industry so dont be smart oh and by the way pulling the battery from your board is a very bad way to try and clear your cmos
and power should be disconected prior to a cmos jumper clear not mention the fact that you should make sure that you and your case are grounded prior to going anyware near your board
oh by the way I got BA in computer science at South Brisbane uni where did you get yours ?

langthang asks what to do BEFORE he/she brings it to the shop, so in that spirit.
First find out if your PC is in warrenty, if it is let them do the grunt work! If not but on the kettle make some coffee and do a bit of back ground reading in computer maintainance/repair find out the basics like grounding yourself and you are ready to go.
Firstly I would check out the power supply, if you have a mate with a pc that works swap the power supplies over and see if that is your problem. If that is OK try reseating (taking them out and putting them back in) all your components, my PC recently went down as one of my RAM sticks died. If this doesn't work then try your hardware one piece at a time in a friends pc (as long as you check that they will fit before you go forcing them in place!) - remember am AGP card will not fir it a PCIe slot - double check it before you start (find the info on google).
Hopefully by now you will have isolated the problem. I wish you Adh Mor (good luck) and hope you enjoy timnkering about in your pc.
When I started messing around with pc's (9 years ago) I knew nothing, I have since then built quite a few machines and fixed a hell of alot more for family, friends and work colleagues. I have yet to fry any component although I remember spending hours looking for the source of my problem only to find that I had not seated the RAM properly.
philraz congratulations on your BA from south brisbane, may I suggest you add some humility to your CV ;)
