If you are using Award Modular BIOS, enter the BIOS then press CTRL F1 to open Advanced User Settings, then click on Intergrated Peripherals. There, you will see the PIO/UDMA settings for the Primary and Secondary channels on IDE 0 and 1.
PIO offers Auto, and Mode selection. UDMA offers Auto, and Disabled. Check to see if UDMA is set to Auto on all channels.

ok, I already uninstalled both ide controllers and reinstalled them and still nothing. so I tried going in to the bios, and can't find my way around. So, here I will write all the options available. Please give me a hint on what to do.. =P
(the items with |> before them are actually menus into which I can go in)
Here goes:
*Main:

Legacy Disk A - 1.44M , 3.5in
Legacy Disk B - None

|> Secondary Master - TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552
|> Secondary Slave - Auto

Language - English
Supervisor Password - Disabled
User Password - Disabled
Halt On - All Errors
Installed Memory - 256MB
*Advanced:
Open Frequency Setting - Standard
CPU Frequency - 100MHz
DRAM Frequency - 133MHz
System Perf. Setting - Optimal
CPU Vcore Setting - Auto
CPU Lebel 1 Cache - Enabled
CPU Lebel 2 Cache - Enabled
CPU Lebel 2 Cache ECC Check - Disabled
BIOS Update - Enabled
PS/2 Mouse Function Controller - Auto
USB Legacy Support - Enabled
OS/2 Onboard Memory>64M - Disabled
|> Chip Configuration
|> I/O Device Configuration

When I go into the Main->Secondary Master(TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552) Menu I can select the Ultra DMA Mode and the PIO Mode.... PIO Was automatically set to 4 and Ultra DMA was set to 2.... The thing is I want to turn ON UltraDMA on my Hard-drive... I tried putting Primary Master on "User Defined HDD" and UltraDMA would be set to 4 automatically, but once I save the settings and restart my computer, BIOS says there has been a problem loading hte primary master.... what does it all mean?? AM I GAY?? ahahehahe... please, help a cheap ass newbie in his quest for DVD burning... =]
thx a lot for your help guys!!!

Two performance issues I seen with that setup, but lets work out this one first:
Quote: I tried putting Primary Master on "User Defined HDD" and UltraDMA would be set to 4 automatically, but once I save the settings and restart my computer, BIOS says there has been a problem loading the primary master.... what does it all mean??
What that means, is that "User Defined HDD" requires you to look at the label on your hard drive, write down the drive's cylinders, heads, and sectors. Put that exact information into the BIOS where the drive is found on the IDE channel. This actually increases boot time, since the BIOS doesn't have to take the time to read this information from the drive. Since you didn't do that, the BIOS doesn't have anything to read from the drive, giving you that error. Basically, the system no longer sees the drive.
I am still concerned about your optical drive showing up in that list, and not your hard drive. But, this topic is getting too far into tech help with your system then it is burning...I hope this is ok with the moderators???
If not, we'll take it to PM.

Quote: CPU Frequency - 100MHz
DRAM Frequency - 133MHz
and those two, should be sychronized. Until you can drop in a 133FSB processor (or 266), you should set your memory speed manually, and drop it down to 100.

thx for all the tips you guys, seriously!
I might even end up actually doing something right! Hahahaha...
Just one last little question: other than the manual of my Hard-Drive and the drive itself, where can I find the number of cylinders, etc? Is there an aplication or something that detects that, so I don't have to open my computer up?
Thx for everything guys!
I'm almost sure my troubles are almost going away... Hahahahha... I might be on the right way to recording my dang DVD-Rs thanks to you guys... =]
THX!!!

Possibly the drive's diagnostic disk you can get from the manufacturer's website, but that takes longer to find then a screwdriver!!
(and if you haven't opened it in a while, shame on you....clean all da dust bunnies out already!!!) :)
@creaky...thanks!

I opened up my computer, unscrewed my hard drive and found no numbers or information on headers and sectors whatsoever... so I went into Western Digital's site and downloaded the Lifeguard Tools and the only information I got out of my drive was this:
LBA Sectors: 78156225
CHS: 4865 : 255 : 63
does CHS stand for Cylinders, Headers and Sectors?
thx everyone!

ok, I'm starting to believe my Hard drive doesn't support DMA... I downloaded the western digital lifeguard programs and found out the data I needed to put in the Cylinders, Heads and Sectors spaces in the BIOS (and DMA 4 was automatically selected), and once I restarted the computer, BIOS said it encountered a problem booting the Primary Master... but I told the computer to continue booting and so windows started up... It was REALLY slow, but I was able to shut down some programs from task manager and everything was back to almost-normal. I ran Nero and tried to record a DVD-R at 2x and the same crap happened: perfect simulation, no burning whatsoever, "Invalid Field in Command".... And once I looked at the error Log I found out that DMA WAS NOT TURNED ON!!! HOLY CRAPNESS!! My hard drive was bought in 2000, if I'm not mistaken... can't I turn on DMA because my drive is kinda old? Well, anyways, here's my log file... have fun!

If I was you I would be more concerned with memory at this point. This is just M.H.O. You are tasking the meager 256 you have to the max and virtual pretty much. Windows is not good about releasing tasked memory when its needed. I say the first thing to do is find out what type mem you use and get at least another 256. With it being so cheep now get more if you can. I run 1 gig mem in all my comps but my notebook and it runs 512. Getting ready to put another 512 in it for total of 1 gig.
I suspect this is not the problem with your burning though. Just needed and might be. I suspect the problem is with the media you are using. I see you have the newest firmware for the drive. It stil might not have write stratigy for the media you are using.

and....on top of that, your drive not being detected as DMA is a hardware issue...most likely the drive since your optical drives are being listed with DMA.
Add more memory first, then tackle the other issues later.

Thanks everyone, you guys, you've all been really great helping me out!
I guess my DVD burning will have to stay on hold for a little while then, but whenever I get the chance, I'll buy some RAM and try to burn another DVD... And if I get any error messages during the burn, I'll kick all your asses for making me spend unnecessary money!!!! LOL!! Just kidding!!! Hahahaha....
Thanks a lot, guys!

I still haven't ventured burning at higher speeds, but at 2x, everything went fine... Thx a lot for all the help, you guys! If I need anything else, I'll be sure to call!
