Thanks cyburzaki for the 42" link! Now let the comparisons begin!!
kchaco, who provided you the Costo price for the 42" Sceptre??
I've been lurking for quite some time and think this might be my time to strike!
Thanks to all for the insightful opinions/comments.

Marcel, the Sceptre's MENU button brings up several picture settings and a number of them control how it shows red. You might want to try my settings. Under VIDEO I set TINT to 0. Under ADVANCED, I turned off VIVID COLOR and turned off SKIN TONE and set GREEN to Middle and BLUE to High, and set GAMMA to 0. Then under SYSTEM, I set LAMP to 0. With those settings I find a very good color balance. The rest of the controls (BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, COLOR) I tweak according to the video source. HD signal from the satellite gives the best color with a BRIGHTNESS setting of 16 and a COLOR setting of 28. I arrived at those using the AVIA DVD, which I have found really useful for setting up a monitor.
I have had the best luck with a DVD player that upconverts DVD to 1080i, and so far the best picture comes from a Denon DVD-2910 which I found on eBay.
The single HDMI I solved with an inexpensive manual HDMI switch.

Quote: the new 42" Sceptre is now listed on their website:

thanks for the link. I hope this one has all the problems with computer input worked out (I hear the version2 of the 37" had problems showing other lower resolutions from video cards). This would make an awesome monitor/tv for my MythTV box.

If I do not go the Naga route I may go to Sears. 5 years ago Sears matched the web price in my 53" hitachi . Im hoping they will this time.
Costco stores have a 52" Panasonic w/stand very similar model to the sears model PT52LCX65. The Costco Panasonic W/stand is $2199 and with a $300 mail in rebate. The model number is PT-52LCX15-B
The measurements are slightly different according to the Panasonic Web site.

I will be making a descision soon. Just waiting for the war department (wife) to come on board.

If the 42" Sceptre is $2,699, then I will buy the 37" Sceptre. It will save me a $1,000. Meanwhile, their specs are the same.

The Sceptre 42" may be $2699 but the $500 off coupon = $2100 for 42" 1080p. It may be worth the wait.
I, myself I am not sure which way I am going yet.
Panasonic 52" LCD R Proj
Sceptre 37" or 42"
I may have you guys make my mnd up for me =-)

Myself, I don't like Projection TV or DLP TV. I dont know why. I really appreciate if someone can give reasons.
For some reasons, I only like the Plasma and LCD TV. Therefore, I suggest you buy the 42" Sceptre if you can afford it. Otherwise, you should get the 37" Sceptre.

About 3 weeks ago I made the choice to finally buy a HDTV. Being that I work for a videogame company full of over 200 tech, nerds I decided to send out an email asking people what where their choices on HDTV?s. After an information overload I narrowed my choices down and started doing my own research. I stumbled upon the Sceptre 37" LCD and began looking for info on it. I found this forum:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=573173&page=1&pp=30
?as of now there are 56 pages of comments on it that go from rumors of the TV?s existance to the current Version 2 release. Version 2 had several bugs that discouraged a lot buyers from getting it..namely tearing and juddering of the image. The last few pages however state that Sceptre has come up with a firmware update to fix these bugs and some others I didn?t mention. If such is the case then I?m sold on this TV. If not, buyer beware, and hope the 42? doesn?t have the same issues.
My only issue now is either get this or wait for the new SED technology to come out. ( talk of 100,000 to 1 contrast ratio?s, 1080p resolutions, 1mm refresh rates. Google it if you want to know more.)
But since we are on the topic of the Sceptre LCD I?ll just stick to that.
....so?price?Well there are certainly no math majors on this thread :p
The cheapest way to buy the Sceptre 37" at this point is through Costco at $1499 after rebates. The catch is the current rebates are only good through purchases before Jan 31st. Afterwards there are no guarantees what the price will be.
The cheapest and only known way at this point to eventually get the Sceptre 42" is also at Costco for $2699. If you buy it in early March though you get $500 off.
$2699 - $500 = $2199
So if we compare deals (both temporary mind you)
37" - $1499
42" - $2199
....a $700 difference in price for a 5" difference in size (since other specs are almost identical)
I suggest you go to Best Buy or any other store that has LCD TVs in both 37? and 42? on display and determine if it?s worth $700 or not for size alone.
Also if there is any confusion on what is better between a LCD or DLP just try once again sitting in front of both at Best Buy. LCD?s with the same resolution and size will (in my opinion) always look better. DLP?s can come in bigger sizes and are cheaper than LCD?s?.It basically comes down to what you are looking for picture quality? Size? Cost?... Do research, make a choice, watch HDTV :p

I've been following this thread the last couple of days and there are a lot of excited people about this Sceptre Monitor. However, nobody has mentioned what the native resolution of the flat panel they are using. Someone that I work with doubts it is a true 1920x1080 LCD panel (native resolution).
He thinks it is a 1280x900 and can ACCEPT signals up to 1920x1080 which it then downsamples to 1280x900.
Can anyone confirm this?

Well the Wife FINALLY drank the cool aid. =-) and she agrees with me in that we need a new TV or possibly 2.
Rear Proj I spoke about before...Out the window.
My next door neighbor works for Fry's Electronics (not my favorite place to buy stuff) - Folks on the LEFT coast of the US know what I talking about. He is a nice guy and could get me some good deals. Here is the final list of candidates.
Sharp Aquos 32" - Reg price $1899 for $1500
Sharp Aquos 37" - Reg price $2799 for $2250
Samsung 40" - Reg price $3399 for $2600 (I can't remember the Model but I think is the LNR409D)
or
Scepter 37" $1400 (If I can get some guarantee that my set will have the firmware update)
Scepter 42" $2199
I want to get the tv soon. I hate waiting. The scepters are a no brainer price wise, etc. But I do not want the hassle of having to send a TV set back that should not have left their production facility with the slew of bugs. The 42", well there is no telling yet as to how good this tv will be.
I currently have a 13" Sharp Aquos in my computer room with just analog and I love this tv.
PLEASE KNOCK some sense into me...I need help! which one should I buy???

I'm very happy with my Sceptre 37" (version 1), the cheapest of the bunch. I would call Sceptre USA and find out the details of the firmware update, and whether the new firmware has been incorporated into the soon-to-be-released 42". I also like the picture on the Sharp Aquos 37". Have you checked CNET User Reviews, and Epinions.com for the TVs you are considering?

You may find this controversial. I've read that nearly all the 1080p compatible TV's have no way to input true 1080p at this time. That means that when you purchase your new Blu-ray player next year with true 1080p source media it won't work on your 1080p HDTV.
I'm dropping out of my quest for at least 6 more months or at least until Blu-ray / HD-DVD players are released and the TV manufacturers come up with a way to effectivly display the source with out down-converting.
(Great Thread!)

I tried putting in the code also and for some reason that link just doesn't work (I think it has to do with "HDTV" being in it....as you can see it's always highlighted by the forum...
By the way this review was also done on a Version 1 set which they no longer produce...

S&H on the Sharp Aquos 45" LCD at Costco.com is $199.99--as it is on a Samsung 40" LCD. That would suggest the S&H on the new Sceptre will also be $199.99. If that $2199 price you found in their database is before the $500 coupon, this set will be available for around $1900 and local sales tax.
EDIT: Although my guess is the 2199 that is now showing in the Costco database is the price after the coupon discount....

Good new my fellow threaders....I just bought the Sharp 37" (Piano Black) finish...Looks awesome hanging on my mocha painted walls. And is only Analog cable.
The good news...Is that I am also going to order the sceptre this week or next...as soon as scepter confirms the firmware update is now included on all units being shipped.
I am happier than a pig in mud....
I'll keep you all updated when I hear from sceptre (it could be a while since they are known for horrendous customer service)
