I do believe that more than one person has been involved in my tech support communication due to the spelling, phrasing differences in the messages. Using just one technician might be the best idea. How was your situation finally solved? I now realize that I have a duplicate post. I though I lost the other one before posting.

Just got my Dimax Grex ver. 6.4. Tried recording a comcast digital cable copy protected program to a Philips DVDR 3390 but was unable to record using moods 01 to 03. I was about to give up when I realized that there is a mood 04. This worked like a charm with excellent video reproduction. I don't know if there are anymore moods after 04, but I'm pleasantly surprised that this thing really works as advertised.

David, how much, if any, did Dimax tech support help you? If they helped you, how many communications to solve the problem? Or did you discover the setting on your own?

Tried e-mailing their tech support twice and twice it came back unsent. I basically just tried all the possible moods available out of desperation. Luckily mood 04 worked. I haven't tried backing up VHS or DVD yet, but will post findings when I do.

I've recently purchased the Grex from Dimax and I'm having trouble getting it to work properly. Before purchasing the Grex, I've tried to burn DVDs from my Time Warner Cable channels and some of the movies will record fine. Others seem to receive a signal or something that causes the recording to stop...sometimes after ten minutes, sometimes much longer than that. So, I purchased the Grex to stop the signal. I have an Emerson vcr/DVD burner combo, model EWR20V5. I'm using a DVR box from Time Warner Cable. My television has the three-plug outlets in the front. I've tried to connect using the photos on Dimax's customer service page, and though I can watch cable, watch television, watch DVDs and burn DVDs using it the way I have it currently connected, it's still not blocking the signal that causes the recording to stop. Can any of you give me some guidance on setup? I'd really appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Mariah

Well, I read the part about changing modes, but the instructions say not to change it unless Grex technical support advises me to do so. I've emailed Grex, but haven't heard anything back from them. Should I change it anyway?

Try it. That's what I did. I don't think you can break it. You can always set it back to mood 001 if nothing happens. I e-mailed Dimax about this and they say its OK if it works. As I noted in my previous post, I have version 6.4 and, as far I know, it goes up to mood 004.

Thanks, David - I'll try it this evening. Did you have the same problem I'm having? It's really weird...I can record anything on HBO or Showtime, for example, but anything on Encore records for sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes a lot longer, and then just seems to signal and the recording turns off by itself.

Not quite the same. Just won't record until I switched to mood 004.
Just recently noticed too that I have problem replaying programs recorded on DVD+R. I see no problem with either DVD+RW or DVD-R.

I think the Grex goes to Mode 005. I consider it unfair and an insult not to tell purchasers the function of each Mode so that the user can select as needed at the moment. Mine handled one tough situation at Mode 004. Now I have it back at 001 and it is doing what I need. The DVD-R and DVD+R situation must have to do with the recorder- player being used. Or the discs themselves. Some forums discuss discs and their quality. Most badmouth discs from India. I cannot imagine how the Grex could affect the playback based on disc type.

I can't agree with you more. With all these confusing mode settings, it's enough to drive you moody, if you catch my drift. :0).

One copy protection scheme is called ARccOS, if I have my info correct. Notice that Grex (see their website) does not claim to handle that scheme. I know of no device that does. Anyone know differently?

For the first time, I recently tried to use the GREX to record from a DVD player to a DVD recorder. The original was a pre-recorded disc. The Grex did not help. The recorder just stopped immediately. I tried two different recorders, same results. Your experience or comments?

Hello,

I just came across this forum & have a couple questions I hope you more experienced DVDers can answer.

I'm very (grin) new to DVD recording. While I realize the Sima CT-200 is almost impossible to find except on eBay, I was wondering if it would remove the "protected" TV signal if placed between my Dish Network receiver & my computer's tuner card? In looking at the product descriptions I see, it looks like it won't. What about the Grex listed on Dimax for $89.99USD? Does anyone know if it can be used to remove the protected signal for TV programs my PC running Media Edition 2005 records through the TV Tuner? The website claims that it, and I quote " will lets you copy, capture and view any protected video content", and bullets Record Protected TV Channels from Satellite or cable receiver.

In reading Mike 1951's March 19 link, it only shows the Grex connecting to a separate DVD/VCR recorder, not a tuner. I don't have a dedicated DVD recorder, as my PC will, up until this protected program error, make the DVDs I want.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer an opinion or help. If you have another suggestion, I'm open. I simply want make a back-up copy of some recorded TV shows in case my hard drive fails. BTW, I'm using DVR 2WMV to convert the non-protected programs so that any DVDs I make will play on a stand-alone DVD player, not just the computer on which they were recorded.

Thanks again
Drgon

Hi, Just got my Grex in last week. I took a chance since could no longer record premium
channels from my cable service. It took a long time to figure out what the problem was since
Cablevision kept saying nothing was wrong.
Contrary to some things I read, their customer service was fine. Got a reply the next day.
He also told me to make sure I specify the newest model, 651. I got it in about 8 days.
I see a lot of people talking about "modes". There don't seem to be any modes on this....
just two plugs, you can either use composite or S video cable. The picture is good and no problems copying. I did use the S video cable. Have made a few recordings already. If encounter any problems will let you know.

Hi! I am new to this also and I recently bought a Sony VRD-MC3 recording unit.My daughter has a number of protected VHS Disney movies that I want to convert to DVD as well as some HBO programming through my DTV tivo. Can anyone tell me if they have had success with this set up??? I am looking at buying the Grex but some of you have had problems...should I just go with the cheaper Clearpix 200 and hope it does Disney movies??
Any help.............thanks!

Hi, I've had the Grex for a couple of weeks now and it's working great. I only use it for
recording from cable to DVD recorder. Have had no problems with their customer
service ... I was surprised since I had read some people have problems. Maybe they
have improved since everything was answered very promply and got it in less than 10 days.
Also was told in their email to be sure to order the newest version - 651! It must be different
from some mentioned as there are no modes on this version that I can find.

Maybe you should write Grex and see if it can be used with what you are doing.

Good luck.

Drgon,

I e-mailed Dimax's tech support dept. [used the support link right from their website] last night to verify if my Philips DVDR 3575, which is not in their list, would work but it was returned as undeliverable [Permanent Failure: 550] so I again e-mailed their tech support and also their order dept. this morning. E-mails to both these departments were returned. I had e-mailed their order dept. almost a month ago with a different question with no response but at least that e-mail wasn't returned. Now I'm wondering if they're still in business.
I want to use it to backup [fair use] my VHS collection to DVD.

Any info you [or anyone else] has concerning Dimax or any other product would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel

I ordered this unit on 9/24/07 and wait to here on confirmation of shipment. Finally after a couple of resends for the request Dimax finally responded on 10/04/07 that product has been shipped with a tracking number that so far does not show on USPS, as they said it would when it hits the US system (part is shipped from Israel). It is now 10/8...still not in system. (Glad I used Paypal).

Lup4u,
I hope it?s just a temporary problem with their e-mail system and you receive your unit. Please post here as to the outcome of your transaction with Dimax. I?ve read numerous posts on A/D that this unit works quite well and should for me since none of my VHS tapes is newer than approx. 1998.
I was reading another thread here that mentioned Prospec offered by Japan Direct. They are digital video editors with high quality noise reduction by removing macrovision and CGMS/A. They offer two units: Prospec DVE 774 and DVE 775. They are much more expensive but it looks like they are both the real deal.

http://www.japan-direct.com/products.asp?type_id=1

I have been considering all of the various aspects to backing up my VHS collection and will put these thoughts down and post them in this thread soon, or maybe I?ll start a new thread for this.

Thanks for replying to my post.

As noted in my previous postings, I only use the GREX for recording from Cable Premium Channels to DVD. This, it does flawlessly in my case. I use the S-Video connection, but the unit also provides for A/C Cable connection.
Have not tried recording to DVD from protected commercial DVDs or VHS tapes, so have no information on that application.
Although copying from VHS would obviously have to be done from a separate VCR and not a combo unit since the Grex is installed between the source and the unit doing the copying.
Without having tried this, my gut feeling, however, is that the Grex would work with protected taps and DVDs also.
As far as use with a PC, the Grex can only be connected with S-Video or A/V cables, so you'd need a hook up hat included one or the other.
Lastly, my experience with Grex Customer Service was, accordng to postings I have been reading, totally atypical. I exchanged two quick emails which satisfiedmy needs and received the Grex a day or two sooner than the two weeks promised.

Reply to DannnyBree.
I'm puzzled. I have Grex 651, which doesn't show any modes at all.
When I had written to their Customer Service I was told to specify
651, their latest model. As long as yours works!
I was amazed, too.
