yes, but when i need to map to it, i need to type in the ip which regularly changes.
e.g. ftp://xbox:xbox@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where the x's regualarly change)
if there was a way i could give my xbox a hostname (ftp://xobx:xbox@hostname) so the hostname can establish what ip address is being used at the time.
a router would do the same thing. my ISP continually changes my ip, i can request for a static but it costs a fortune.

hey umm... im trying to transfer halo2 maps from my xbox to my comp for modding through FlashFXP. I have a harmodded xbox with x3. I try ftping the maps on FlashFXP using a router, but the files download for a little while then just stops. I have come to a conslusion that this is due to the internet connection. So i am now trying to FTP with cross over cable. But I cant seem to connect. I used guides from www.teammodders.com, i followed it exactly. It says that after i configure the ip address on both comp and xbox, i have to reboot my xbox. I do so. When it brings me back up to my dash board, its supposed to show the ip i put in earlier befor the rebooton the bottom left hand of the screen, but all it says is "no links!". Can anyone help?

Is there any way you can do it without the router? ie. Crossover cable from PC > Xbox using Windows ICS Internet connection sharing (assuming you are using Windows)

I guess I could. Wouldnt that involve me hooking up my comp with my xbox using an ethernet cable to get things set up? The reason why Im choosing to use crossover because I beleive it will be the most successful.

Something that always seems to work for me is to turn off any firewalls(ZA/Xp ones), Set static IP's on pc and xbox, the weird thing I found here is my xbox my default seem to like 192.168.0.2 and my pc was 192.168.0.3. making sure to chage gateway to 192.168.0.1 and the same for the DNS. I say weird because if I had 192.168.1.2 on the xbox and 192.168.1.3 for the pc the setup would not work for me. All of above with either a crossover cable or router just using Ms internet exploer. ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.0.2 sometimes you get a another window open up along with "access denied" message. On this new window you should be able to click on file/login which promts you to enter in the username/password again xbox/xbox and that should be it

That is using a cross over cable to connect my computer and my xbox directly, you shouldn't have any problem at all
and if you still do try @Mik3h suggestion above, that work for me
too.
Hey I was just wondering how come the IP on your computer isn't the same as on your xbox. As you shown the ip that is set on your comp is 192.168.0.2 but the IP on your xbox is 192.168.0.1. Why is that
Thank you

Think of it as your name is John and mine is Michael.
If we were both called John and someone called our name, which one of us would answer!?
We need different IP Addresses, just like we all have different names!
The just need to be in the same network

Let me put it to you this way, when you need to pick up the phone and call your friends, you don't pick up and dial your home number, do you get the picture now. You need to look into IP address and find out what they mean.

Well finaly I have gotten somewhere. When I called XBOX live and Verizon for help with my XBOX live not working it seems they messed up all kinds of IPs and such.
Now I can network to my XBOX but I cant transfer any files so I decided since I can access my XBOX now I should be able to FTP using IE.
Ok cool it works but when I put in the password it tells me either the username or password is wrong??????
I put in xbox and xbox for the password.
Any clues?

OK now it works when I want to view E: but nothing else. When I want to view others it asks for a user name and password and denies me.
And it only works on unleash x dashboard. I cant do it while in anything else.

Check the Xbox dashboard settings, make sure FTP is enabled and that the username and password for connecting is "xbox" and "XBOX"

hi all
i have just successfully softmodded my 1st xbox
and have got the FTP going to boot! however i
have one small problem. i can only FTP to the
xbox if i disable my wireless internet connection.
my setup is as follows.
Xbox linked with a Xover cable to a NIC in the PC
PC is linked to the wireless modem router with a
PCI wireless adapter.
The IP for the wireless is as follows
IP 192.168.2.3
SUB 255.255.255.0
asigned by DHCP
the modem router is 192.168.2.1 so this is always
the default gateway.
the IP for the xbox is
IP 192.168.2.100
SUB 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.2.1
DNS 0.0.0.0
DNS 0.0.0.0
xbox is static NOT DHCP.
i presume i only have a minor problem
with not being able to run my internet
and FTP network but id like to sort it
as i would like to allow XBMC to access
the net from the xbox. i can link my laptop
to the PC and theres no problems there.
i have read all the TUTS and other threads
related to FTP and i havent found any answers
as yet. please helppppppppppppp.

Ok I have a question for you all. I have a completely unmodded Xbox. No softmods installed. #1: Is it possible for me to FTP to and from my Xbox? #2: If the answer to the last question was "yes", then why isn't it working? I have the settings on the Xbox set to auto (DHCP) and its currently on my network as 192.168.1.133. In SmartFTP, when I try to connect to that (logging in as user: xbox password: xbox), it gives me a message after a couple seconds saying "An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.". When I attempt to do it in Windows Explorer, I get a message saying "The connection with the server was reset."
So it seems like the second I connect the Xbox resets the connection? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Nope I'm afraid not.
If you were to launch the softmod installer, it opens a temporary FTP link, but you can't do it with a completely unmodified box with no softmod installer.

Ah okay well thanks a lot for the quick reply. I think I'm going to install Ndure 1.1 as soon as I get my hands on a USB-ended Xbox controller cable. Then I'll FTP T3CH's latest XBMC build to it and set that as the default dashboard. Thanks again.

Try making an exception in your firewall for port 21 and explorer.exe. Remember to kill the exception before going back online tho ;)

Make sure your network settings are configured properly, dynamic IP on the Xbox and your PCs connection settings for the Xbox also being dynamic, or if you must, then use a static IP on both ends instead.
If that fails, try taking the advice of ja.. Varnull. And make an exception in your firewall, or if the only firewall you are using is Windows firewall, disable that completely in the security centre in control panel, then "manage firewall settings" and just turn it off, and search for a good free one.
