ok, formatting the HD to get all the space is dead easy! Just install UnleashX, enable disk G , and Format it! Password for the format menu is 'Xbox' (no quotes - notice the cap X).
thanks Mike for his help/support!

Hey Guys, I need help getting my hard drive upgraded.
It was soft modded using AID V3.1, and had XBMC as
dashboard.
My new drive is a Western Digital WD320JB which is in the
compatibility list.
I followed the procedure in this link, with one exception.
My eeprom.bin file is not in e:\backup_linux. I did a
search of all the files in drive E and found it in:
e:\udata\21585554\000000000000\backup
So, I copied this file to xboxhdm\linux\eeprom folder.
I also copied all the C: and E: files to xboxhdm\linux
before burning the ISO disk.
I proceeded to build the new hard drive using the
xboxhdm boot CD, and it all went smoothly (I used
Option 3 "Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities"
to lock the new hard drive).
When I connected the newly built hard drive to the
xbox and turned it on, it had a green ms dash rather
than XBMC. Should the dash be the same as the old
drive, being XBMC?
There are also other problems:
1. I can no longer run the XBOX games such as
Midtown Madness3 and MechAssauly. It complained
with this error message:
"your xbox can't recognize this disc..."
2. If I select "network setting", the xbox will
freeze after about 2s.
I have connected my old drive back, and it's functioning fine
and can play those 2 games.
Please help!
Thanks

erm.. Mike may help you a bit more here as I am totally new into this. I just followed Mike's tutorial with no problems at all. The only point that Mike missed to mentioned is that if your disk is more than 137GB you will have to format a new partition (G:) with UnleashX so that you can get full capacity of the disk.
In regards to your problem.... sorry.. I have no clue!!

the reason I asked is because my ulx dash copied a backup game... I just used the file explorer and copied everything in the D:/ drive to a game folder and the game boots very quickly and smooth.

have you locked the drive? I am not sure of course if this is causing the problem but locking the disk was the most tricky part from Mike's tutorial.
When the format was completed I restarted the PC, booted from the CD-RW and selected the option to 'lock' the disk without needing to write down the HD Pwd etc.
I am also a newbie so I can't be of any great help, but I found this for you. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/6.htm

the drive says its locked after I go to atapwd... just doesnt wanna go into the box I guess! when I go to lockhd, it says its locked already... the eeprom is on the disc, so it works sometimes... I'll check out the link tho, but I'll try again (maybe rebuilding the drive again:?)

From my understanding error 6 is the drives inability to unlock. It may be that your drive is not compatable.
http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=statistics
Screw around on there a bit, and see if your drive is compatable with the locking unlocking xbox stuffs.

I've tried 2 drives...
40gb Seagate ST340810A (which seems lockable, according to that site)
60gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y060L0420411 (haven't seen, but would like the bigger drive)

nanospyda,
If your original xbox HD is working to your softmodded xbox then definately this is an issue of your new HD.
1. Either the HD for some reason is not supported for this (i.e. not lockable, etc)
2. or the most possible ... is that you are doing something wrong.
I'd insist to re-try. Once you are done (and before you lock the HD), just reboot your PC with the CD-RW inserted into your drive and when you get the menu
1) Boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default)
2) Boot text-console with xbox-drive utilities
3) Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities
4) Boot to DOS with HD unlock tools
choose option 3. This will lock your HD.
I m not really expert into this, I did that and it worked fine.

I might have messed up... Im going to try again, this time only copying my C drive only to the disc and see if that works...
edit:the Maxtor drive is also lockable (checked on xbxhq) so I will build the new drive and let y'all know what happens!

I think you could give it a try and do not copy your C and E drive. Download a new fresh xboxhdm, just place in there your own eeprom.
As regards the CD-RW , I would strongly recommend using one of those. I failed to do that with a CD-R or a DVD-R to be perfectly honest... (really is strange, have no clue why!).
Give it a try....

this is what I tried and it worked! My MS dash is on now, and I am readying the softmod... thanks to everyone who helped, I have so much knowledge and now its easy to do! If anyone has a problem using xboxhdm and error 6, just read the above and you should be set to go!

Looks great. I un-softmodded my Xbox a while back. I'm thinking of modding it again and putting XBMC as my main dashboard. Keep it up.

Sorry to jump in, but I soft modded my XBOX and all the modded maps work, but I can't get on XBL. If I boot normally, XBL comes up fine, but when I use Unleashed, H2 works, but no XBL. I checked the Network settings on the Unleashed Dashboard and it has valid IPs. Anyone?

You are trying to sign on with a modded dashboard which = permanent ban!
Use your microsoft dashboard to sign it. When installing the softmod, you DID choose dualboot didn't you?
Koolor - Yes.

Yeah, I set it up for dual boot. Anyway, since someone else on a different board called me an idiot for wanting play modded maps on XBL, I'll cease from posting. My intent was to play with other XBL friends and NOT in MatchMaking with the maps. Guess I'll resort to playing with Glitches.

You'll get banned from matchmaking, even if you only play with modded maps in a custom game. Even if it's closed party. Your HD is scanned as you sign it and searches for the signatures within maps, and compares it to their database, if it conflicts, you'll be banned within 6 hours.
