Does ZipZoomFly have a toll-free number? All I can find is a regular number.

Well they finally sent me the "return shipping label". Like Yujenh wrote, it is knid of whacky. I called FedEx-Kinko's downtown here and they were familiar with this type of RMA label. The man said to just bring the paperwork and the package in and that'd be it. It seems to be working out well, because the FedEx-Kinko's store is on the LunchLine shuttle route only 1/2 mile away. So tomorrow, I'll hitch a LunchLine ride, send off the package, go up the street and grab lunch and I'm back in the office inside my hour.

They do have a toll-free number: 877-228-6958. I used extension 2100 (their verification extension) in order to reach a live person. They go to great lengths to avoid advertising this number to their existing customers but it dials into the same line as the 510 numbers.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

What a mess - after taking my package down to FedEx-Kinko's wasting my lunch hour, they inform me the special return label information issued by ZipZoomFly is invalid, and they would not accept it. I tried the toll-free number only to get automated voices saying they'll call back. Yeah, right. Never again, ZZF!

I just got my Benq 1640 from ZipZoomFly today, installed it and burned by first disk (TY Yuden T0002) and got a 98% scan.
I know some of you are having problems of getting what you ordered, but my order came in fine and I am a happy camper....Wish those of you who are having problems with ZipZoomFly the best of luck!!

I thought I warned you about the wacky return system. I guess i wasnt clear about it. It did list the locations which will accept the returns but my is like 30 miles away. So I didnt go to that one. Hoever the Fedex place i want took care of it for me but it wasn easy man. So good luck to you men. It does take some effort to get rid of the package.

@laboy,
those scans are almost worthless man. they are so inconsisten. this time is 98 and maybe next time it will be 94. most of the people does not take them seriously.

@Yujenh:

Yes, you warned me but I didn't think it'd be that whacked out.<g> They did resend the label, but this time in .pdf form. Maybe they should have done so the first time, but initially they said all I needed was the number. I took the package to another FedEx agent last night and there was a sweet old lady behind the counter who knew exactly what to do. She even admittied it was a goofy system and they didn't get many returns like that.

Bottom line, I was in and out in 5 minutes and the FedEx driver had just pulled up. Got my tracking number and went home and rewarded myself with a little "refreshment". Then I discovered on my answering machine that ZZF had called me and left a message to call them back so the RMA could be put to rest.

Sounds like all this could be turned around and used as an episode on a sitcom.

Zipzoomfly pulled a another sleazy little tactic with me. I ordered my DW1650 on December 31st. I had ordered from them before, but for some reason they wanted to "verify" my order, but only notified me several days later. I did Zipzoomfly's little verification process and they told me my order was "released for shipment today". However, I checked my order status last night and it was still listed as Packed for shipment. I called them today and they said the Benq drives were discontinued (duh) and that they would no longer stock them. Zipzoomfly claimed didn't know why more order was still showing as packed. If I had not called them, I'd still be waiting for a drive that would never come.

Yeah, these guys are scam artists. I always knew Zipzoomfly was a little dodgy, but I didn't think they'd pull a stunt like this. Well, the only good news in all of this is that they probably would have lied and shipped me the 1650V reader like they apparently did to so many other people.

However, a word to the wise: file a complaint with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, and post reviews on websites like epinions.com and my3cents.com. Even if Zipzoomfly resolves your problem, it's important for would-be customers to know the shenanigans Zipzoomfly pulls.
I am glad that I never had problems with ZipZoomFly. They used to be Google Gear, and they were good then, and for me, have been good now. It would appear that they have made a major blunder, and if I was on the receiving end of the blunder, I would be angry too.

I hope that they make things right for all of you.

I also have always had good luck with ZipZoomFly.They usually always beat newegg's price because of free shiping and no tax in TN.

I received the BenQ 1620 today from 3btech and I think it is what I ordered. WOW! This is the first burner where the light goes red when it burns, this simple feature amazes me.
For the drive model when I open ImgBurn all it has listed is ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16.

Is this a genuine BenQ burner?

I will check my drive to see where it was made if I get around to installing Linux on my computer today.

I found more info on the ATAPT 2X16X4X16 reason on this drive and how to fix it.
Fix Instructions

The links in the fix instructions to cross flash where broke so it was a little to hard to find the files needed to cross flash the drive but here is a working link.
Files to cross flash

I did the cross flash on my drive and updated to the latest firmware version B7W9 and it seems fine but have not burned yet. It does list the drive as a BenQ now.

The only reason I have ever had to flash a dvd drive was so that it was able to burn a new type of disc(Not on this drive). I think it is always a good idea to update the firmware unless it is known that the newer version is not as good as the previous.

I updated my firmware because I wanted to see BenQ for the dvd drive and not ATAPI. Honestly, I do not know if it did any good or not to update the drive but it did not hurt it.

I am burning Linux Red Hat Fedora Core 6 x64 on the BenQ right now and this drive is unbelievably quiet.

Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen. ZipZoomFly has processed my return and credited my account in full for the BenQ DW1650-1650V switch. They may have watered down my martini, but they made good on it in full. I'll still be very skeptical of them from here on unless they offer an attractive incentive to come back.

I hope the rest of you folks had good luck getting this snafu staightened out.

With that over and done and the Plextor rumors flying around, where do we go from here? I still have one DW1655 and an NEC3550A.

thank god, this is finally over. I got every single penny back.
well, the plextor thing is just rumor after all. They probably thought about quitting but decide to stay but i think its really just matter of the time before they really quit. Well, the Nec will always be a good bet and there is always liteon. I believe they will probably be the biggest manufacture for dvd burners for the days to come.

That product code does not come up. That was probably a lingering error in their system. They do still have the DW1650V DVD-ROM READER though.
