Here?s what I would do now that you can get the I386 file from the CD.
1. Copy the I386 folder from the CD to C:\Windows
2. Use the instructions for changing the SourcePath in the registry to C:\windows that?s all no more, no less.
3. Now run sfc /scannow and it will find the files. Sfc looks for the I386 folder so it?s not included in SourcePath.
I don?t know if you changed the SourcePath or not but if it still prompts you for a CD, it?s NOT right..
Not a good idea to backout SP3 :(

Yep, I tried that. I think its complaining about the SP3 files. I think I need to find a copy of XP Pro SP3 and try it again.
I got through the scan but it kept prompting me for a XP Pro SP3 cd. I got through by canceling but I am guessing the files where I got the cd prompt did not get fixed.
I still have to have zonealarm at the less secure setting to access the internet.
I have sent out a note to someone that might have the cd's. For now I am going to bed. I have to work tomorrow but I will be in touch. Let me know if you have any other ideas.
I appreciate your help 2OG

Good News!!!
I found a site that zonealarm had this exact same problem. apparently they have had it for a while.
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r2...OBLEM~start=100
I checked out the zonealarm updates and they just released an update to fix it. Apparently they had something that did not play well with MS update KB951748.
It appears we drove ourselves crazy trying to fix what turned out to be an application problem. :(
I can now access the internet in stealth mode :)
I am still going to try and find someone with a copy XP Pro SP3 cd so I can steal the i386 folder and contents in case of a future problem.
I think i am going ahead and install the other layers of protection after I create a new restore point of course :)
I can't thank you enough for your help and guidance thru all this. Hopefully I can let you spend more time helping others!

Sorry, I knew I couldn't leave you alone :(
I have noticed another oddity on my computer. When I go to the add/remove programs and look at the list the only ones that actually have a remove/change option in them are the programs I have installed since we started working on this
Adobe Reader 7.1 - I installed today
Antivire, Boclean, HJT, WinPatrol, and Zoneaslarm have change/remove options.
Everything else just shows the Size, Used, Last Used information.
I am baffled. For the most part its no problem but I got a notice from Dell today saying I had to upgrade the "Dell Support Center" which required removing the old "Dell Support Center". I can't do it and I guess I will not be able to upgrade.
Any ideas? I am still looking for someone with "XP Pro SP3" installation CDs so I can try and run a clean sfc.

I have been working with computers for over 40 years. I never recommend a program that I have not tested and found to be the BEST FREE program available. I screwed up on Zone Alarm, I knew about the conflict with the M$ update but thought it had been resolved already.
Avira AntiVir Free is the BEST of the FREE, bar none. Even better than most paid programs?.
Bottom Line: AntiVir performed the best of the free programs, PERIOD.
Sounds like your Add/remove has lost contact with some of the un-installers. There is a program called CCleaner that has an un-install feature that, most of the time, works better than windows Add/Remove.. Has a lot of other great features and it?s FREE. Give it a try and see if you can un-install the programs that are not showing up in windows. In the mean time I will look for a fix for Add/Remove.

Some applications in Add/Remove Programs list are missing Change and Remove buttons ?
RESOLUTION
? Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This starts the Registry Editor. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\<Program Name>
? In the right-pane, do the following:
Double-click NoRemove (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
Double-click NoModify (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
If NoRemove is set to 1, the Remove button will be unavailable
If NoModify is set to 1, the Change button will be unavailable

Unfortunately the only applications lised in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
part of the registry are those I have added since we determined we had a clean system. I have checked the registry backups we made and even the one I had prior to the SP3 upgrade and it is also blank. I am guessing one of my viruses removed the from the registry.
Does CCleaner depend on those entries being in the being in the registry?

I really don't know what it looks for..
If you have CCleaner, run it and click on tools on the left side and look under un-install to see if they are there..

Just a thought, if ccleaner gets it?s list from the registry, You in trouble.. ;)
On the other hand, each program has an Un-install program in it?s folder, or should, and you can go to the program folder, click on Un-install and remove it.. Hopefully ;)
Look in some of the folders that aren't showing in add/remove to see if they have an un-install program..

Ccleaner seems to have everything listed and worked with the two programs I used it on.
I think we are in good shape 2oldgeek. You are the man!
Hey, in unix there is a diff command to compare two files and show the differences between text files. Is there something similar to that for windows?
I would like to export the registry and compare it to the previous exported registry just to get an idea whats there. No plans on changing things but it might give me a better idea how things are setup.

In Windows the command is COMP
COMP.exe
Compare two files (or sets of files). Display items which do not match.
COMP [pathname1] [pathname2] [/D] [/A] [/L] [/N=number] [/C]

I?m glad CCleaner worked for you, I thought it would but wasn't real sure.

Great link, thanks for the info and your assistance.
Yes, I have about 15 years unix experience and spent the last 10 primarily as a solaris admin with limited experience in HP-UX, AIX, SuSe and Redhat but I am clueless about the windows world and have only learned what I had to to keep our home pc running.
We had our own security department so I did not get too involved with that
Hey, is there any reason to add privacy software to the mix here or will the host.mvps take care of those issues.

@ cralford,
I don?t care to get into my background but this is my standard reply:

As far as privacy software goes, I don?t specifically use it. I do from time to time use a program called GhostSurf by Tenebril. It changes your IP address by going through anonymous servers thereby keeping you invisible on the net and stopping any un-invited malware downloads that you didn?t request. It also has other features that you might check out here. The SpyCatcher part is no good but the ghost surf is great! Drawback: it costs and I don't normally recommend anything that's not FREE.
