I most definitely have the file split bug so i'm going to uninstall AutoGK and reinstall.
Seems i overlooked the obvious re the file splitting - i normally use the 1400MB setting but that's what's causing AutoGK to split the movie in two parts as well as creating the 1400MB AVI ie you get 3 files. Most of the time the file splitting causes AutoGK to hang ie it rarely finishes successfully so i couldn't leave it running unattended. (It always creates the 1400MB output file then attempts the file splitting so basically you couldn't batch any jobs together as it would hang at the finalstage ie the splitting stage).
A bit of research revealed that the way you disable the file splitting stage is to choose an odd number for the output file size so now i use 1401MB and AutoGK no longer tries to split the resultant AVI ie it no longer hangs and just creates the 1401MB output file and completes successfully. This means i can (finally) batch together loads of movies so i can just leave the pc on crunching thru the movies. I've done another couple dozen movies since yesterday and (so far) no more sync problems, so i've dug out about 50 movies and i'll chomp thru those over the next couple days.
Maybe i was a little harsh re AutoGK a few posts back, it was probably just one of the settings i'd messed with before (i didn't reinstall in the end nor did i downgrade to an older version). All seems to be well in AutoGK land again :)

Hi creaky and ferguj:

I'm still here following the discussion. A little over my head at this point until I experiment some more with AutoGK and gain more experience.

I appreciate the little tweaks that help improve the quality of the output.

Thanks,

Yes, and major insomnia most nights of the week. Unemployment is a tad painful :), keeping the old grey matter busy with movies though, have almost finished putting 60 movies on the PC for converting to AVI. I think AutoGK averages an hour a movie so will have to get used to the roar of the PC fans for a few days :p

Did you get your sync issues straightened out?

I seem to have (so far), it looks like it was a combination of a bad day (!) and Resident Evil Apocalypse that had atrocious sync in XBMC and less bad sync on the PC, and the audio setting in Advanced settings wasn't on Auto (i guess i left it on the wrong setting after the sync hassles with Liar Liar the other week). So basically it all seems fine at the moment.

Due to the amount of movies i'm converting at the moment, and some of them being retail dvd's, i'm using a Dual Core machine alongside the Quad Core, to separate the load a bit, i have DVD Rebuilder running on both, then i'll run AutoGK on both. For now there's only a couple movies to do in AutoGK locally on the Dual Core so i'll run a batch of them over the network shortly otherwise the Quad will have to do the other 58 movies that are on it's own local drives.

LMAO!, i had a similar response from the same post i made on a.n.other site this evening :)
My eldest has just started watching that movie (D.O.A.) on the xbox as she saw my desktop and she needs no encouragement to watch it even if she's watched it already recently. I'm many days overtired so i'm leaving the pc's crunching thru the movies and going to watch some Black Adder in bed 'til i eventually nod off..

p.s. any AVI's i've converted since my last post are fine sync-wise so all is still well on the AutoGK front..

I've tried a number of different software titles mentioned here and in other threads, but I haven't found anything that works for me. When I record TV shows, I sometimes want to create a DVD copy of that show, but I want to edit out the commercials. I record onto a DVR, then make a DVD of that show using my DVD recorder. Then, I was hoping to rip that DVD to my PC (WIN XP), convert to an AVI(?), delete the commercials, then burn back to a DVD using ConvertXtoDVD. It looked like AVIDemux was the program to use to rip to an AVI file, then edit. However, AVIDemux continues to give me an error message when I attempt to open up the file on the DVD. The error message is - Can't open E:\Video_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB.idx":13 (Permission Denied). Am I doing something wrong, or is there a better way to accomplish what I'm trying to do without losing too much quality.

I need help in backing up my current DVD collection. I would like to have my DVD's backed up to one AVI file. Can anyone tell me what software i should use or what is the best way to backup my DVD's to a NAS and share them with media center.

Thanks for the help!

yes but i am looking to only have a single AVI file. When i back up my DVD's they have multiple AVI files, using DVDFab. I should also add, some are shows like the Simpsons. They have multiple main movie parts. So maybe i did not give all the details. Sorry

The method i'm using throughout this thread, is to use AutoGK to process my DVD movie files (movies, not episodics) into a single 1401MB AVI file. You can choose different programs/different output sizes, i've settled on using AutoGK as it's dead easy to use, allows batch conversions, produces decent output (at the 1401MB i've chosen anyways), is fairly quick to run (my Quad Core Q6600 averages an hour per conversion, my Dual Core E6400's average 1.5 hours). Oh and did i say it's dead easy to use :)

Whilst i'm well versed in ripping/encoding episodic discs to fit on single layer disks i've only ever converted DVD movies to AVI, not episodics to AVI so someone else will have to comment on that side of things.

I don't know if AutoGK can output multiple episodes directly into one single AVI, processing the DVD as is. You can join the DVD episodes(the VOBs) first and then convert to AVI, or convert to AVI each episodes and then easily merge into a single AVI, using avidemux for example(just make sure you use the same parameters for each episodes, same resolution, audio...)

If you want to encode multiple input files into one resulting AVI you can do it by appropriately naming input files: *_1.vob;*_2.vob etc and selecting just the first one (Extension can be any of supported types apart from AVI). In IFO mode AutoGK automatically selects all VOBs that belong to one vobset.
This is out of the help file for AGK. I have never attempted the rename method to add multiple files so I can't say how it works, but it does say it is possible.
