ok everyone we are all friends here....lets not even give the previous confusion another thought. i can certainly understand both sides, and i don't harbor any hard feelings towards anyone, as i hope they don't towards me.

let me reiterate especially to sophocles, i appoligize for my language. it was very crude and i should have handled the situation much better than i did.

so please accept my appoligy and i promise i will refrain from such vulgar displays of expressing myself.

I accept the apoplogy but I'm going to ask that you be up front with your questions, and that you don't digress into areas out of your knowledge range or have no relevance to the discussion. All of the people that I know who use Linux need no help from a forum in regards to buying their DVD-Roms. By the time they've got their Linux hardware working, installing a dual-layer burner is a non event.

i am in total agreement with you sophocles.....when i asked about d/l burners it was a poor attempt to cheaply obtain valuable information. instead of doing the leg work myself i was trying to have it spoon fed to me, which i know now is not how these forums work. my thinking was that if i could take the suggestions offered here on AD as a starting point, it would cut my research time down to a fraction. lol, though in retrospect i see not only did it not accomplish what i wanted it too, it gave the impression that i am completely invalid in all related matters. now i see where that idea came from, which i only have myself to blame for.

all i can say is i know better now and will act accordingly in the future.

hi guys....

everything is working great now.....

here is what steps i took, unfortunatly i did them kind of all at once so i don't know exactly what fixed my burning problems but it should provide a rough guide of what to do if you are experiencing problems.

1. Clean reinstallation of OS ( XP in my case )
2. switched to Ritek blank DVD's
3. Obtained CCE SP / DVDrebuilder

After I did all that, backing up my DVD's works perfect everytime. not one problem out of 5 DVDs i have tried so far.

Though i will say that i was having trouble burning data DVD's as well (seriously 9 out of 10 were BAD), so before i reinstalled XP or did anything else i tried burning a data DVD with a Ritek disc for the hell of it and it worked no problem. So most likely it was the discs i was using (memorex) causing all the trouble. My advice to any one having trouble particualary intermittant trouble get some Ritek discs and start from there. Even better if you haven't gotten your media yet make sure you get Ritek.
