Just a Quickie, no u99's since last friday, promos are good, took a glitch on the listings due to the version research for chryl, I'm only missing tues, and thurs of next wek, been doing regular (Daily) recordings using TVGOS, the message from cheryl is what she told me also, they aren't sure according to her what even caused the problem in the first place, ... sounds familliar, when somebody asks me to fix something, and I fix it, and they say what was it, I say "Don't know, it just works now)

Hey all, I was just wondering about something a little off topic. If your recorder has an FR record mode and you burn a DVD, lets say a show, and play it in another player, how does it fare? I tested it in a GE DVD Player and at certain points in the show, which was not very often, it had a brief stutter. I have heard that some DVD Players do not like the FR bit rate and might have problems.

I read somewhere that for recordings between 2 and 3 hours, the FR dubs will play well to most players but beyond that you may see problems (mileage may vary). I have not tried going outside this recommendation, but the dubs I have made with FR have worked fine on other machines.

I've been reading all the posts since trying to solve the U99 problem with a call Panny tech support and their solution failed. They suggested the firmware update to no avail. I've tried numerous resets also to no avail so I was resigned to turning of TVGOS function and doing manual programming until I inadvertently may have solved the problem.
While waiting for my new tv to be delivered yesterday, I unplugged the DMR-E85 for several hours and then plugged it back in after delivery and the TV was on it's stand. I enabled the TVGOS and so far, no U99's which had been coming every 30 minutes or so which required the usual pushing the power button twice to get it to go on. I am now receiving the TVGOS and so far it has populated for 2 days. Is it possilbe that it was this simple - unplugging for a few hours and then plugging it back in?

I doubt that leaving it unpluged for a couple hours would do anything different since the memory would of been cleared out seconds after the power was lost to the machine.

I did the same thing at Cheryl's request and got 0970DL and still had schedule listings but right away lost all ads and E85H forgot what stations it was supposed to use for downloading TV Guide data. I am almost positive that if you get channel listings but no ads you will also be getting U99s. The fix is CH -up and Ch down on the front of the E85H at the same time until E85H resets and 12:00 time is flashing on front of E85H followed by 30 secs unplugged. You will have to go through set up again but within a day or two you will have full listings and ads and no U99s.

More than likely, they have only a couple customer service reps working at one time nationwide. I have found this to be true in dealing with other companies like this.

I would at 1st tend to agree that memory is cleared within seconds of unplugging the unit, but on the other hand there must be a reason why when we have certain kinds of PC problems we are told to do a cold boot by 1st turning the PC off and leaving it off for 30-60 seconds. I personally have experienced a huge difference in PCperformance when doing a cold boot as opposed to a warm boot when trying to correct a problem. Obviously I have no clue if I will remain U99 free, but to this point it's been over 12 hours and so far so good. Has anyone else tried the unplugging method? Or was I just lucky?

RAM is volatile for the most part meaning that once power is lost the individual logic gates that determine which cell is on/off lose their ability to hold a state and reset to an off state which in turn clears memory. The time needed to have this effect propogate throughout the array of memory could be microseconds or seconds depending on how much memory is there. During a 'warm boot', since the voltage is still being applied, the memory contents will remain and will not change until overwritten. Kind of like your HDD, if you erase something on your HDD it is still there until you write over it. The only way to truly erase a HDD is to write a '0' value to the whole HDD.

Same here, it's been OK since Monday. Not a definite
fix though.
Panasonic & Gemstar still working on this issue.

I am having the same U99 problems on my DMR-E95HS model. Are others with this model experiencing the same grief as all of us with the TV Guide glitches?
Yesterday, after leaving the TV and recorder on for most of the day, I had no U99 appear. About 20 minutes after I turned it off last night, the U99 appeared. I unplugged/replugged and went to bed with no U99 on the display.
Woke up this morning to a U99 on the display. Did the "unplug/10 min./replug" routine and have not turned off the TV/recorder yet. Guess I will just leave it on when I have to record when I go out to ensure that U99 does not creep back in and screw up my manual timed recordings!
Anyone having success with turning off the TV Guide function completely? what is the best way to do this?
Thanks

soju,
The only people I know of who have not been able to disable the TV Guide download and prevent all occurrences of U99 are those who have a cable box. I do not have a cable box. I am presuming that you have upgraded your E85H firmware to the latest version so that you eliminate U99's as a consequence of performing Divide Title.
See post "22. September 2005 @ 10:41" on page 7 regarding how to disable the TV Guide download.
Also check out post "29. September 2005 @ 16:56" on page 8 of this thread.
And post "2. October 2005 @ 16:45" on page 9 of this thread.
And post "19. October 2005 @ 18:14" on page 29 of this thread.
I believe the instructions for performing the Auto Channel Scan are around pg. 43 or pg 46 in the manual.
If you perform a factory reset (press the channel ^ and v buttons on the unit for several seconds simultaneously - not on the remote) or if you enter and then exit "service mode", any programs already recorded on the HDD will still be there.
For more info on "service mode", "factory reset", and how to perform the firmware upgrade, see http://www.dxcc.com/dmr-e85h.htm
Service mode and factory reset have been discussed extensively on this thread - to say the least.

Regarding my de-activating TVGOS post (19. October 2005 @ 21:50), I do NOT have a cable box and have successfully disabled the downloads...no u99 errors since then. The key is doing the seemingly useless "auto channel" before configuring TVGOS. No idea why, but it worked!

Regarding the discussion about how many seconds to leave the unit unplugged to achieve a ?cold boot?...
It is necessary to let the power supply capacitors discharge until the internal voltage gets close to zero. The time varies depending on the design, but a couple of seconds probably isn?t enough to do this in all cases. I usually do a slow 10 count, but 30 seconds should be more than enough for PCs or modern video recording equipment. {High voltage is a different matter. Believe it or not, high voltage circuits in older TVs were known to retain a lethal charge for several hours.}

I still have U99 when I uuse TVGOS.
On Tuesday morning I had channel lineup and I was asked to chose between to lineups. And I had promotions. It was miracle - after 14 days of having SC-HT1500 home theater system (probably it's a combination of DMR-E95H and SC-HT1000.)
Today, I woke up to U99 on the display. I pressed power to turn it on, again U99. I had U99 5 times during 30 minutes !!!
I still have old channel lineup, but no promotions.
I hope so that Panny & GEmstar will find the solution soon. I was looking forward to TVGOS and using one-touch easy timer recordings, but I haven't have a achance to do it for over 2 weeks I have this unit.
I am leaving the unit turned on when I want to record shows (using timer recording manually) or I type 00000 as a ZIP instead of real ZIP.

I bought a Panasonic DMR-E500 earlier this year. I am using Time Warner cable without a cable box. All was fine until August then the first U99 error occurred. Tried everything - flashing firmware, unplugging, resetting, nothing seems to be working. After resetting sometimes it will go a week without a problem but lately it is only a few hours until the U99 error is back.
The concensus seems to be the problem is related to the TV-Guide. Hopefully either Pana will update their firmware again or TV-Guide modifies the way they send the Guide.

My update - 2 U99's in 2 days and my lineup is still empty. I'm considering moving to Oklahoma City as a solultion. (Or maybe I should start making idle threats against multinational electronics monoliths - I hear it's all the rage - and oh so effective.)
I have a theory that makes ME feel better, so I'll share it.
Panasonic has always had such rock-solid, well-engineered products up until now that they have never had to deal with customer service on this level. So that is why they appear to be such unresponsive boobs.

Almost every person who's been on this thread for the past month + has done this and is still getting the U99's. I've done that procedure (and every other idea suggested on the forum) about 10 times and sometimes go 5 or 6 days without an error and then....good morning U99.....
I hope you'll come back to update the thread when you get your U99 tomorrow!

Apparently all of these E85H machines are not the same or TV Guide sends different data depending on Zip codes. I was getting continual U99s 3 times a day from mid Sept to early October. When I did the CH-up Ch-Dn 30 sec unplug, then I went 9 days no U99s and full listings with 8 or 9 ads.
When I did the Service mode thing to check Host 0970DL, I lost part of listings and all ads and had 2 or 3 U99s a day for 2 days.
I again performed the Ch-up Ch-dn and 30 sec unplugged and now for 2 days have channel listings for 3 or 4 days and 9 - 11 ads. Today (the second day) I still have 11 ads but 3 have changed to new ads and have 5 days listings.
So it looks like I am fixed. Could be that my E85H is a different build than some others out there or it could be that my near Boston Zip 01887 is sending better information. I know Cheryl was having trouble duplicating the U99s and her Zip code is only 2 towns over from me.
When I was getting the U99s after the service mode check, the E85H was getting data from many channels including a NH PBS channel which I am sure does not have the same channel programming as my Zip code area.
Now that I have reset, my E85H in standby does a lot less channel surfing and seems to get data exclusively from 2 channels a Local CBS and MSNBC.
A Question for those continually getting U99s: when in standby mode does your E85H change to many, many channels to get data or does it seem to change to 1 or 2 channels only? My stable E85H goes to local ch CBS and stays for 20 minutes or so and goes to MSNBC and stays even longer? The key to the fix may be getting it to go to the right channels for the TV Guide data. Perhaps trying a Zip code that is in your area and has the same TV line up but not your exact zip code could fix some problems. Because some have issues and many others do not, TV Guide may have some incorrect Zip code information? Just a thought.

kensmith: You're right about your response to Bonus2, we've all tried the reset and still had U99s.
As I stated before, I have gone 2 weeks now with no U99. Bonus2 may be onto something with the "2-channel" only system. I disabled (set to "off") ALL download (or possible download) channels except the two listed in the diagnostic page for "Host Chan" and "VBI Chan." (shown in hexadecimal). Has anyone else done this and still had a U99?
If the cause is multiple available download channels "confusing" the unit (or too many downloads to choose from causing the unit to "time out" while looking for a d/l station), this would explain why only some areas are affected, especially lager metropolitan ones. Bounus2 originally had a ZIP with potential "conflicting" lineup info (the New Hampshire PBS station) until he changed the ZIP to one that appears to have ONLY TWO download channels available.
Has anyone else tried turning off all "potential download" channels EXCEPT the "main" ones listed on the first diagnostics page and STILL had a U99? Just looking to prove/disprove my theory. I suppose it's easiest to identify "other" download channels if you have a cable box and can SEE them, but I don't, so I just guessed.

O.K., got some free time, the students are taking a test. :) Anyway, disabling channels to prevent TVGOS d/l (In my experience doesn't work) .... I have PBS disabled on my machine, it's the only channel for me to get data, so if that were the case, I'd have nothing at all, I don't believe you can control what channel is used for the data at all. My talk with Cheryl monday told me something I kind of figured, the data downloads, in some cases last as long as 3-4 hours. and they repeat sometimes, start for me at 2-3 am (cheryl confirmed that) and 3-4 hours puts end time at 5-7 am, another d/l starts somewhere after 7, (can't remember the exact time she told me, think it was 7:45 my time). Another interseing thing, been saying it since she told me, ... your first Listing D/L will be of days 1,2,3 and 8, so if you reset today, and caught a d/l, you'd get Fri, Sat, Sun, and next friday's data, nothing for mon, tue, wed or thursday. It would take another download to get monday, anther for tue, etc. So the whole week to fill in would take 5 days worth of d/l's from your first sign of data (Listings)
BTW, on the d/l channels, Cheyl told me my area doesn't use MSNBC, just the PBS channel, that's why she used us (Oklahoma City) as a test-bed.
