I have a NEC CD/DVD_RW ND 3500AG burner in my computer. It has been running great for the past year, but lately, when I burn movies, they always seem to freeze, then skip ahead about 2-5 minutes. Is it time for a new DVD burner?

Maybe not - they can last for quite some time. What blank media are your using? Burn speed? Is your burner's firmware up to date?

I am using RiDATA and also Memorex. How do I update my firmware?

RiData are ok - memorex though sucks - causing playback problems, burn errors etc. To update firmware you can check the manufacturers site for the latest or here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php
But you need to make sure your get the correct one. Do you have a HP, DELL, Medion, Fujitsu, Siemens, Gateway pc? Do your know your current firmware?
To update it you just need to flash your drive - this 'teaches' your drive read/write on different/newer media. But we need to find the right one 1st.
Using better media like Taiyo Yuden or verbatim and keep your burn speed 8x or lower will also help.
