im guessing your hooking up the headphone through a front audio port

if you have a thin grey cable running from your cd drives onto the onboard sound remove it. - if i have this cable connected i can hear my cd drives spinning, besides the cable is completely useless anyway

also check that the front audio is wired up correctly by checkin the motherboard manual

Studio Comp: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC ~ 2.35GHz runs at 40 celcius idle and 48 under stress (aerocool GT1000 really works!), Asrock K7VT4A , 1024MB Dual Channel DDR 400, MSI Nvidia FX5200 128MB OC ~ 600MHz mem 350MHz core,80GB SATA + 200GB SATA + 120GB IDE, 7.1 Channel Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound and midi interface. 19" Sony SDM-HS95 TFT monitor - sweeet
Comp2: AMD Sempron 2400+ OC ~ 2.0GHz (Stable), Asrock K7S41GX, 512MB DDR 333, Onboard Graphics, 40GB Maxtor IDE

set of monitors on the way soon :P

what about the grey cable from the cd drives? like i said if you have one remove it and try again.

try connecting up your front audio aswell. only the left channel of my onboard sound works unless the front audio is wired up so give it a try. it might stop the problem

Sounds like the hardware of the motherboard or the PSU.
Unfortunately all the items you mention are running off the PSU or are feed through the motherboards power feeds.
I would first try another PSU if you can, it may have developed a short and be on its way out.
What PSU is it?

P.S. that onboard sound card really is low performance.
Paying money for a sound card is one of the last things most people do, as they think they already have one built in which works okay, so whats the point? it can't make that much difference.
Firstly the sound is awful, and secondly a seperate card releases CPU performance, as the sound processing is done on the card not by the CPU.
Everyboby I know who finally spends some money on a card, even £30-45 suddenly appreciates the benefits and wishes they had done it earlier, as they show just how bad the onboard sound cards really are.
I am not suggesting you buy a card, as you have another problem, but recommend you think about it as soon as you can.

ok what a mission trying to plug my front audio ports in, the front audio ports had AC97 plugs so i had to look in my mobo manual, what good that was. Tried every configuration and it just wouldnt work and then i sore that gay audio cd cable in there plugged into the mobo but not into the cd drive hence picking up the feedback from everything. :-) Cheers SypherTek

:-( found out my mobo doesnt support my led fan thingee
